Splatoon OC idea no. 521: false cleaner wrasse, unknowingly adopted by a family of "true" cleaner species, who feels different and lonely as a child due to having violent instincts and a temper their contemporaries lack, and seemingly lacking cleaning instincts themselves. While receiving some sort of routine medical checkup as a teen, the doctor notices something amiss, and a DNA test proves that they are not the species they thought they were, and they have a Buddy The Elf moment. Their life is forever changed by this revelation, and they fear they will be shunned by all, even their own friends and family, if the truth is revealed.
They then go on to perhaps:
a) overcome their instincts and become a cleaner through sheer effort out of a genuine desire to reject predation and help others (although I'm never a fan of implying a whole species is inherently "bad," so this is probably my least favorite option listed), or
b) reject being a cleaner, and finally feel able to do their own thing, finally free from expectations, and potentially being disowned by their family (which in itself may be cathartic, bittersweet or tragic depending on their previous treatment of their adoptive child), choosing a hard but self-actualized life over one spent living a lie for the comfort of others, or
c) after months of agonizing, comes out to an accepting family who only wishes they knew sooner, connects with other members of their species, is largely accepted by society aside from the odd judgemental asshole and is finally able to truly Live, a weight lifted off their shoulders, understanding they were never "broken" or "evil," just an inherently different type of person.
Queer/neurodivergent allegory? Cuckoo motifs? Agony and self-hatred over something intrinsic to oneself, and then finally acceptance, and joy and community? Or perhaps the tale of a dyed-in-the-wool predator learning to temper their urges and be gentle?
(I'm not huge on the latter, tbh, because I always want to see characters like this just go apeshit and Carrie the haters, stop holding back and bottling up your rage at an unfair existence and MAIM. This is def due to me being an oft-bullied child who has had many abusive jobs, lol. Stop being nice to assholes who will never return the favor and instead eat their livers deep fried with lemon juice and a side of chips)
(HOWEVER, this potential glorious cathartic make-them-pay bridge-burning plot comes with the downside of implying certain species in this world are naturally violent, which would make logical sense in a world of anthro fish but unfortunately has strong parallels to real-world human racism and may send the wrong message... and also is just kind of depressing? You see this a lot in vampire and werewolf stories that manage to avoid racism and actually be great allegories for discrimination, though... it's definitely something that needs handled with a tact and grace I am unable to give it)
(whole thing is maybe or maybe not kind of Kris Dreemurr-core... I just love the trope of "adoptive child of different species to its parents grows up oblivious to the truth, always feeling alienated for reasons they can't articulate or fully understand, then finds out the truth and has a moment of great life-and-identity-redefining catharsis..." the queer/neurodivergent allegories... the personality-defining nature of inexplicable childhood social rejection... the ANGST...)
Thoughts? I was thinking about cleaner wrasse/shrimp in Splatoon world, and then thought "WAIT, WHAT ABOUT FALSE CLEANERS"

Maybe can you share some character head canon ideas?
OH YEAH
- marcella and ann are autistic
- wolf probably is too lol
-andy def has adhd
- each of the dolls embody a part of poppa, for instance:
- ann is his love for marcella and also just a metaphor for him himself, she's def the most like him
- andy came from stories poppa would tell marcella when she was young, and embodies poppa's brave-face through hardship
- baby is poppa's anxiety and is partly representative of what he wishes he could provide. baby has so many nice dresses, poppa is poor and likely unable to provide marcella with such nice clothes. baby is also maturing fast, something poppa sees in marcella and is saddened that she’s missing out on getting to just be a kid. because she has to be constantly bogged down by worrying about mommy and her illness.
- teddy(/panda) is poppa's wisdom and his protective-ness over marcella
- camel reflects how useless poppa feels when he can't adequately care for marcella or make money for her. just like camel, he feels discarded, because he feels as if he's failed as a parent. his age (also reflected in camel) only makes things harder, too.
- camel is a toy that poppa used to fix up for another kid, but he was abandoned, so poppa was planning on giving him to marcella one day
- bat and wolf aren't actually part of the general's army proper. he doesn't like the taste of animals. he just feeds them human flesh and used good old fashioned manipulation
- wolf has fear aggression but is too afraid to direct it toward the source of his fear, general d, so he directs it outward
- bat is trans lol (because only male canaries sing but also because i do this to all my favorite characters sooo)
- teddy is aroace, but has a special interest in romance tropes so its a lil confusing for him sometimes hehe
- the rat in the rolls royce is general d, and mommy is. defo already dead
- poppa made teddy out of scraps for momma when they were dating, and his glasses are an old pair of poppa's
annnd theres def a lot more but thats what i can think of for now lol

fic tag game
aaahhh @vishcount thank you for tagging me!!! These are so fun and I adored reading about your fic journey~! ೖ(⑅σ̑ᴗσ̑)ೖ ❤
OH as a note!! For the ppl I tag at the end I don’t expect you to read all of this bc it’s A Lot!!! but I figured you might want to do this game yourself? haha :)
Name: cross-d-a shortened version of my first ever username. unfortunately stuck with it now haha but i’m fond of it :p wish it was cuter tho!!
Posting the rest of this under the cut so it doesn’t eat up people’s dashes!!
(。•̀ᴗ-)✧
Fandoms:
oKAY YIKES there are....honestly too many too name. I’ve got a short and obsessive attention span so it’s either all or nothing with me usually. When I can stay in a fandom for a long period of time it’s a miracle. I’ll name the bigger ones that I’ve all written fic for! Even if I’ve never posted them haha
Right now I’m very firmly into Daomu Biji (dmbj). It feels like it’s both got a crap ton of content and yet barely anything at all haha. Maybe because the English fandom is so small. But at least there are a bunch of dramas and books!!! I really, really, really adore dmbj so much!! And a large part of that is the fandom!!! It's been a really cool and unique experience! Everyone in it is truly so kind and wonderful, and I’ve made some really incredible friends because of it (looking at you vish!! ❤). I’ve got a bunch of wips, but I’ve only posted two fics for dmbj!
Before this I was very into Guardian and mdzs. MDZS was my first foray into cdramas and Guardian’s Zhu Yilong really suckered me into watching more haha I also have fics for both these fandoms!
My very first fandoms were Fullmetal Alchemist, D. Gray-Man and Naruto. My very old ffnet account has fics for these and I’ve got a bunch of newer wips on my tablet. Then Star Trek, Twilight, BBC Merlin, Sherlock, Death Note, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Battlestar Galactica, Avatar the Last Airbender and Marvel were a few of my main ones in high school. Plus a bunch of anime (like Fruits Basket! and Kuroshitsuji and Natsume Yuujinchou).
Then college hit and I renewed my childhood love of Tolkien (mainly lotr and the Hobbit), and Star Wars. I also found Teen Wolf! Then after college it was Stranger Things.
I find myself in a cycle of mild fondness and complete obsession with these fandoms haha I go back to Star Wars at least once a year!! Then I’m in the gffa hole for a few months. Marvel also reoccurs, depending on how interested I am in new content! Star Trek I always always always go back to. TOS is my comfort show and it will never fade from my heart ❤
But for now I’m stuck in cdrama hell and I love it
Tropes:
Time travel, found family, whump+hurt/comfort, fairytale-like elements, resurrective immortality (thanks to a “Nine Lives” Hobbit fic), CROSSOVERS
I’m a slut for all these things so they often worm their way into my plots haha
I also just- love weird premises. I think that’s the anime influencing me haha
Fic I spent most time on:
My series he leaves sand and stardust in my wake (main fic is hurricane on the edge of oblivion), I have...spent five years on now. I have done so much research for this fic it’s insane.
The premise is force ghost!Obi-Wan getting shunted back into his tiny 10 year old self. I incorporate a shit ton of legends and I try to stay as canon as possible. I basically want this au to feel like it’s 1000% plausible while still getting all my gay shit. It’s chock full of whump, redemption, found family, minor characters turning into major characters, and I’ve got slavery uprising on the mind, too. It’s just- everything I could ever want to explore in the Star Wars universe basically.
It’s my first big project. I started doodling and scribbling ideas in the margins of my notebook in my Scottish History class. I adore it so so so much. But, because of my hyperfixation and fleeting intense obsession with things it makes it- really difficult to consistently update. I leave it for months at a time and I am constantly guilt-ridden about it. Because it’s my baby and I have a lot of wonderful readers. I fear I’ll never be able to finish it. Especially since I’ve written so much and I’m still only in the beginning of it. ( ; A ; )
Also, I’ve spent so much time with Xanatos, Feemor and Bruck that they just feel like mine now. I can’t read any fics that involve them, it’s too strange. Which is a damn shame because I love them so much haha OH ALSO!! I think it’s the first really big fic to include those three?? So I’m very proud about that haha (I’ve had so many ppl comment about how they actually Give A Shit about these three and are Invested bc of me haha)
Favorite fic(s) you’ve written:
hurricane on the edge of oblivion (with nowhere to go) (Star Wars)
My long-term passion project. My love-letter to Star Wars, I suppose. Reading it now I feel like a lot of it is clunky or long-winded, but I think it really shows the foundation of my writing today :) Main characters are Obi-Wan, Xanatos Du Crion, Qui-Gon Jinn, Bruck Chun and Feemor. Eventually we’ll get to Maul, Savage, Feral, Shmi Skywalker, (more!) Ahsoka, Anakin and a shit ton of clones ❤
things we hunger for (Guardian)
My Ye Zun self-indulgent fic. It’s a time travel amnesia Weilanzun! Honestly has some of my fav writing I’ve ever done. It’s so soft and really indulges in the hurt/comfort. It gives Ye Zun the friends and family I think he deserves. Also, he gets to grow into a (mostly!) functional person and I adore him.
the beast that slumbers within your soul (mdzs)
Jiang Cheng centric fic!! I feel like all my favourite fics I’ve written are love letters haha. This is one def my love letter to Jiang Cheng. This fic possessed me for two whole days. I wrote 16k in almost one sitting. I went to sleep at 6 in the morning bc I couldn’t stop writing. And when I drifted off I kept thinking of new ideas so I’d whip out my phone and write down lines and notes. I- have never ever ever felt that way about anything. It was- insane. It felt insane. It was so amazing. I’m still riding the memory of that high.
Basically Jiang Cheng actually finds Baoshan Sanren and it turns out she’s a fox demon and Jiang Cheng is descended from wolves. It’s- okay I said the fic above this had my favourite writing?? That was a lie. This has my favourite writing I’ve ever done. It’s unfinished bc I am in dmbj hell but I am still excited about the next chapter which features Wei Wuxian’s pov!!
the whispers of spirits (dmbj)
My current passion project. In a way it kinda feels similar to hurricane? Bc multiple povs, incorporating different aspects of canon (we’ll get there!! I promise!), shit ton of research, etc. etc. I really really really love it for so many reasons. I’m basically taking all the things I was unsatisfied with in Reboot and Sha Hai and running with it. Found family and whump galore! It’s also a love letter to the women of dmbj who really deserve so so so much better.
Honourable mention to:
One Day (you’ll have given more of yourself than is meant to be taken) (Marvel)
This fic also kinda possessed me. I just- couldn’t get rid of the idea of a trans!Thor. And I mean a mtf Thor! It’s just? So many people look at Thor and go “that’s a Real Man.” Full stop. They never think there could be anything more, and it really really really bothered me. So I wrote out my feelings. I’m not trans. I don’t have that experience at all. I’ve had issues and confusion about my gender but nothing like this. I just wanted to do justice to this idea of Thor in my head. And I still feel a bit nervous having posted it. But I've gotten so many comments from people who really connected with what I’ve written? So I’m very very thankful I wrote it and it has a very special place in my heart. It’s a very cathartic fic.
Fic I spent least time on:
Probably we rise (Star Wars) and I think it shows haha. I wrote it in response to Dave Filoni posting a drawing of Ahsoka and Gandalf telling her “People thought I was dead, too, and look how that turned out...” So I incorporated Ahsoka (and Din and Grogu and Ezra!!!) into the ending of Rise of Skywalker, kinda explaining how I think they could all still be alive. :)
Longest fic:
hurricane is my longest fic (159k) but I’m kinda worried whispers will eclipse that.....
Shortest fic:
Of my posted ones it’s The Five Moments it Took Tony and Scott to Admit They Were Best Friends (and the first time they ever did), currently clocks at 1.6k. It’s unfinished tho so maybe that doesn’t count.... otherwise it’s we rise which is completed and 2k.
Most hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks:
hurricane overall has the most of all these. Though I don’t think hits counts as much bc it’s multi-chapter. If you discount multi-chapter stuff, most hits goes to my obikin smutfic Homecoming, bc people are horny af haha
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on:
If I had energy I’d like to rewrite the beginning of hurricane bc it feels so so wordy. I’d want to expand on One Day bc I really would like to write a whole series with trans!Thor. And like- I’d really like the focus to finish any of my WIPs.
Share a bit of a WIP: I really wanna share my Guardian/dmbj crossover that I started back in August. Bc I adore the idea of wu xie&shen wei&ye zun triplets! Plus time travel!!! I dunno if I’ll ever finish it tho ( ; A ; ) It just feels like a lot to deal with right now.
This scene takes place during the Mountain Awl arc. Guardian crew and desperado fam run across each other at the village! Wu Xie has recently found out that he’s adopted and he’s searching for answers in the area Sanshu originally found amnesiac!toddler!Wu Xie in :) Gonna pull two snippets bc I’m v excited and this might be the only time anyone else sees this fic haha:
“Oh?” Pangzi focuses on Yunlan now, lips twisting. “You think I’ve ‘got the wrong guy,’ huh?” He laughs, but it’s not a nice sound. “That’s rich! Are you that cocky or are you just stupid?”
Bristling, Yunlan drops his hands and scowls. “Excuse me?”
“Sir,” Shen Wei tries. “I think—”
Pangzi’s eyes snap back to Shen Wei, sharp and blazing. “How dare you fucking steal his face!”
What?
Automatically, Zhao Yunlan turns to Shen Wei, but the professor looks just as shell-shocked as Zhao Yunlan feels which- is seriously something. Since everything about Shen Wei is so carefully controlled, kept to the minimum. Except for those delightful little smiles that bloom across his lovely face, or the startled little bursts of laughter that fall from his lips. Or even when anger and frustration spark across his features, cracking his calm veneer open enough that he can see a glimmer of what lies beneath, the fire in those eyes. Zhao Yunlan delights in those moments, makes a game of making Shen Wei’s control slip.
He tells himself it’s nothing more than a game. Nothing more than trying to find out what makes Shen Wei tick.
Zhao Yunlan’s always been very bad at lying to himself. Or very good. Depending on who you’re asking.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Yunlan splutters.
But before anyone can say anything else, a very familiar voice calls:
“Pangzi? What’s wrong?”
Yunlan can feel Shen Wei stiffen, and Yunlan himself is pulled to that voice like a planet in orbit, like the inevitable plummet to the ground.
Another shadow wavers in the doorway before it steps out onto the dirt. Light illuminates shaggy hair, limning it gold, sharply casting everything else in shadow. But as the figure nears, the contrast softens until Yunlan can see the newcomer’s face properly and- and—
“Wu Xie!” Pangzi growls. “We’ve got ourselves an impostor!”
The man wearing Shen Wei’s face steps up to them, brows furrowed and mouth pulled down into a sharp frown. He glances between them, eyes landing on Shen Wei. His scowl deepens. He opens his mouth, but then—
“Wu Xie?” Shen Wei breathes, all trembly and lost and hopeless.
Heart in his throat, Yunlan turns to Shen Wei again. Turns and flinches at that stricken look upon Shen Wei’s pale pinched face.
“A-Xie?” Shen Wei chokes. “Didi?”
and
Pangzi snorts. “Professor?”
“I-it’s true!”
Startled Yunlan swings his attention over to Jiajia who clenches her backpack to her chest, face screwed up in admirable determination. “P-professor Shen took me and Xiao Quan on a field trip to investigate an archeological site around here!”
“Oh?” Wu Xie drawls all slow and amused. “Well, what a coincidence. We’re archeologists, too.”
“With guns?” Yunlan bites out.
Wu Xie raises a brow, grin full of teeth. “Well, you can never be too prepared.”
“Right,” Yunlan drawls right back. “Are you a professor, too, then? You come here with your students?”
Wu Xie outright grins. “You could say that, I suppose.”
Out of the corner of his eye, one of the men rolls his eyes. He’s the one with sharp features, glasses and looped earbuds. Does he think it’s appropriate to listen to music at a time like this? Yunlan admires the man’s gall.
aahhhh vish thanks so much again for tagging me!! This was so fun to relive my fic memories!! I’m gonna tag @alwaysaslutforshakespeare @jockvillagersonly @tehfanglyfish @lichelleme @undyingsunshine @humanlighthouse @thewindsofsong I’m curious about your guys’ writing and fandom journey!! As always, no pressure to actually complete this!! I just thought it was fun ❤

What are your favorite games and franchises? Top 5?
OH BOY have I got feelings on this subject.
Please keep in mind - I’m a storyteller and a writer. I fucking /love/ a good story. I DM a DnD game and my biggest weakness is that I don’t often include enough combat because I am so much more interested in telling a story. So for me, there’s got to be an emotional investment for a game to really land. I also hyperfixate like a motherfucker so I often refuse to pick up new things purely because there’s not enough space in my head for them at the time, so I’m slow getting to things as they come out.
So, I’m first and foremost a survival horror bitch. I cut my teeth on Parasite Eve before I played any others - my mother scrimped and saved and fought her way through Wal-mart back in like 1998 to get me the original Playstation gaming console and Tekken 2 (which was my first PS game, I played it in an arcade near her barber shop as a child - Tomb Raider 2 was my second). The old Playstation discs at that time came with demos for different games, including Metal Gear Solid, which I replayed until I could have done it in my sleep because poverty meant I wasn’t likely to get another game anytime soon. I mention this because the Parasite Eve trailer used to give me nightmares but I was super, super hooked.
I am a huge Silent Hill fan. Huge. That is a tragedy I could write a whole ‘nother post about, because as excited as I am to finally get my hands on Death Stranding (again, poverty, so it’ll be another minute before we can get a PS4), we’ll never get another SH game again unless some major reconciliation happens with Kojima and Konami, which is unlikely (and also hard to hope for - I’m happy Kojima now has the creative freedom to go as balls to the wall as he wants).
I am an equally huge Resident Evil fan. I’ve always maintained that my first fandom was The X Files, but my wife pointed out a few nights ago that my RE love started around the same time in the late 90′s, so now it’s a chicken and egg kind of thing. Point being, it’s either The or One Of my longest lasting fandoms/interests. RE and Silent Hill get compared to one another a lot - RE7 did nothing to help that - but they really are apples and oranges to me. Fruit, sure, but two totally different tones and experiences.
I’ve been a huge Tomb Raider fan for forever - my first high school boyfriend was loaded and bought me Angel of Darkness to come play at his house and while it was def critically panned, I do recall enjoying it - so that’s been fun to get those games remade with updated graphics. I’ve only played the one but the others are def on The List.
So now that I’ve talked for an hour, my Top 5 fave games ever -
#1 - Resident Evil 3 I am beyond jazzed for this remake, and a lot of people in the 90′s complained about RE3′s lack of clear cut boss battles, but I don’t know what they’re talking about. The entire fucking game is a boss battle - Jill vs. Raccoon City, and of course, Nemesis, who used to give my mother nightmares and caused me to sleep with a leaf-stabber by my bed for years. Jill is far and away my favorite protagonist in RE; she’s got a resilience of the spirit that somehow isn’t conflated with naivety, which is uncommon in ‘nice’ female protags. She’s savvy but she’s still kind, and she’s committed as fuck to survival - not to mention, as zealotous a Chris and Jill shipper as I am, she and Carlos had hella chemistry and I’m excited to see where that goes (JD Pardo would have made a fuck of a Carlos Oliviera, btw). It was An Experience and it’s forever at my #1.
#2 - The Last of Us
There is no comparison for emotional weight in video games, as far as I’m concerned. SPOILERS if you don’t already know the ending (this game came out in what, 2014?) but to me one of the biggest thing in the game’s favor is that the protagonist made the wrong choice. He had an option to potentially eradicate the cordyceps fungus and maybe save the world, turn the tides back for humanity, and with the weight of the world in the balance, he chose to save Ellie instead. It was, on a global scale, the wrong choice - but it was the human choice. It was the thing that a dad who never properly grieved his dead daughter would do for the surrogate daughter he inherited by accident. As for Ellie, there is no other character quite like her in games, and she’s fucking quality LGBT representation, especially considering how little we see queer children in media. I still cry every time, we play this game twice a year like clockwork and every single time, I still cry.
#3 - Silent Hill 3
All of SH’s games will have a special place in my heart - and if you wanna talk shit about Downpour, I’ll meet you in the Denny’s parking lot at 11, you better square the fuck up because I will defend Murphy with fists - but 3 is the best, hands down. I felt like it did the best job of streamlining the series’ ... uhm... somewhat complicated lore into something more understandable. SPOILERS: The villains are horrific - the Missionaries strike fear into my heart every time I play, and Claudia eating a miscarried god fetus to become god herself? Fucked up on a level you rarely see. I suppose if you didn’t catch it in the last sentence - your protag Heather vomits up a fetal god late in the game. Yes, you read that right. The best thing about this game though? Heather. I could climb up my feminist soapbox and talk about Heather as a subversion to video game tropes all fucking day - she’s a nonsexualized teenage girl whose father is killed for her character development. She’s self-sufficient, tough but still vulnerable, and hard as nails in a fight. As I might have mentioned a time or six, she also voluntarily aborts a god because Fuck Your Plans, She’s Got Her Own.
#4 - Final Fantasy X
Listen. I don’t know how much of this is because of actually enjoying playing the game and how much of it is emotional attachment. As most of you who follow me know, my mother died when I was sixteen. When I was about fourteen, I dated a rich kid who used to bring his PS2 to our very not-rich house and play games for us to watch - the sort of neophyte version of Watching Guys Play Videogames, if you will, which is another rant for another time. He got a Gamecube specifically so I could play RE Zero and Hunter The Reckoning. He was a neckbeard but he was also desperate to keep me from ditching so he did the smart thing and plied my very poor ass with money and food. The #1 game in the watching roster, though, was FFX - and if you know anything about the game, you know how heavily spirituality features into the story. My mother, very caught up in a very Eastern Philosphy Meets Quantum Physics internal seeking about the nature of things, was hooked from the word Go. She used to sit and watch Trey play for hours - we all did, but having her join us and love it that much? Wonderful. Half my memories of this game are both of us crying - crying when Yuna dances to send the souls, crying when Yuna reveals she’s on a suicide mission, crying when she and Tidus fall in love anyway, crying when she sends her Aeons to die in the final fight, crying over ‘the fayts are waking up’, crying when the big reveal about Auron comes up, crying crying crying. My wife bought it in 2011 and I watched her play through it again and while it suffers from the same issue as all FF games - too much filler and weird battle scenarios - it was cathartic. I miss my mom.
#5 - Resident Evil 6
Eat my entire ass. You already knew this was coming. I will defend this game to my grave for the fact that we have complex, interesting narratives surrounding female characters who have actual personalities. Was it perfect? No. Did it take RE out of horror territory and move it more into action? Woefully, yes. Is this series deeply problematic for where it chooses to set down your mostly-white protags and have them kill their way through? Big time. Don’t gloss those facts. But it’s got emotional punch in spades and a few weird character breaks that ended up being kind of brilliant - Chris has been so resiliently relentless in his fight against bioterrorism that a major PTSD break was inevitable. Leon would of course risk life and limb to help Helena, even though she implicated herself in something terrible. The icing on the cake to me was a grown up Sherry Birkin, wide eyed and believing like hell in the fight she thought she was on the right side of and getting knocked down only to get back up. Ada’s entire side campaign was brilliant. I hate some of the control choices they made in this game - the running from the Haos scenes near the end of Chris and Piers’ campaign makes me want to eat my own fist - but so it goes with most RE games (until RE4, moving your protag was like driving a tank). Jake and Sherry are My Unsinkable Ship. There are at least six scenes across this game that never get easier to watch - when the bomb hits the city and the cut scene of the mass infections begin, I still get sick to my stomach - and that, to me, is the mark that this game struck a hell of a chord in terms of storytelling.
This was long.

1, 2, 7, 8 :)
hi luv u
1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-fic.
I usually stay within the canon universe, my aus are pretty like…idk “realistic” I’d say. They’re like situations I could def see my characters in. Angsty but (as of the past few years) soft in the end :-))
2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
cheerleader and nerd trope but! never fear! i’m working on that now ;)
7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
If Chloe Beale was a color, it would be yellow.
Beca’s never met someone with such a vibrant and bubbly personality. If she’s being honest, the first time she encountered Chloe, she didn’t think it was possible for someone to be so genuinely nice. But that’s exactly what Chloe was - and still is.
She’s sunshine, the warmth and brightness almost blinding at times.
And for Beca Mitchell, it’s scary.
It’s scary because if Beca was a color she’d be blue. Not that pretty sky blue, but the dark navy blue. She’s used to being on her own. She didn’t have many friends growing up; her father left her and married that step-monster, and relationships - well, there really weren’t any until Jesse.
- burning through these yellow lights
I love this one because (with the song yellow lights by harry hudson as inspo) having these colors really sets the contrast between beca and chloe and their initial personalities. It kind of sets everything else up, being able to understand the two of them.
8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Chloe laughs humorlessly, shaking her head. “We’re not happy.”
“I’m happy when I’m with you,” she tries. “You’re it for me.”
“You are too Becs,” Chloe says, reaching out to letting her fingers run along Beca’s chin and her jaw. “I’m the happiest when I’m with you, but we’re never together. It’s hurting us. It’s hurting who we are.”
“Are you…” Beca isn’t sure if she should be incredibly upset or incredibly angry, or maybe both. “Is this it, then?”
“Not forever,” Chloe tells her. “But yes, for now.”
- andante, andante (oh please, don’t let me down)
I think this is a super mature moment for chloe in this universe because she’s wanted Beca for so long and she has Beca now, but she’s able to take a step back and realize this isn’t working, that the timing isn’t right. For once Chloe is putting herself first rather than doing anything it takes to have Beca in her life.
send me a fanfic writer ask!

COMIC TEA PARTY- THURSDAY BOOK CLUB START!
Good evening, everyone~! This week’s Thursday Book Club is officially beginning! Today we are discussing MK’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by Marika Kapogeorgakis (or MK_Wizard)~! (http://mksjekyllandhyde.thecomicseries.com/)
Remember that Thursday discussions are completely freeform! However, every 30 minutes I will drop in OPTIONAL discussion questions in case you’d like a bit of a prompt. If you miss out on one of these prompts, you can find them pinned for the chat’s duration. Additionally, remember that while constructive criticism is allowed, our focus is fun and respectfully appreciating the comic. All that said, let’s begin!
QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?
Archangel
I'd have to say the first real heart-to-heart that Hyde had with Lucy.
MK_Wizard
For me (the writer), my favourite scene was when Jekyll finally stood up for his niece Emily.
khkddn
that was one of my favorites too
MK_Wizard
PS, thanks to everyone who came. You all rock!
khkddn
it was so sad when he didn't stand up for her at first
MK_Wizard
@lomcia (princess_lom) Please don't do that.
lomcia (princess_lom)
so you want me to discrabe which one i like?
MK_Wizard
Yes please.
RebelVampire
for the record images, whether emotes or w/e, dont get archived anyway. so text and links are always better
lomcia (princess_lom)
So. I like when he said that he won't have glasses on his face. World NEVER ihere is making me laugh
MK_Wizard
Yes, but... I don't feel comfortable when people take "snaps" of my pictures and show them elsewhere. It's something I was taught not to do to others.
If you must share, please share through a link.
lomcia (princess_lom)
Act 2 page 21 when they look into a mirror xD he look so happy in first panel and then when he realised that its not him xD i love it
MK_Wizard
That was fun for me to do that part.
lomcia (princess_lom)
Act 3 page 7! When he sees our lovely Lucy
that first panel!
Archangel
I must admit to having a bit of a crush on Lucy myself.
lomcia (princess_lom)
It was perfect
MK_Wizard
I have to admit that Lucy is one of the characters I proudest of. I worked very hard on her to not only make her progressive, but also deep. I wanted to give her a reason for being as she is.
Archangel
More historically plausible in our world than you may realize, too
lomcia (princess_lom)
I prefer as a female Hyde
Archangel
lol
Actually, have we seen any lady trolls?
Can't recall
MK_Wizard
Not yet.
lomcia (princess_lom)
not yet so there will be xD
MK_Wizard
Maybe, maybe not.
lomcia (princess_lom)
I hope Albert Ode will find nice woman
RebelVampire
for me, my favorite scene is probably the one where jekyll is in the mirror having given hyde full control and resigning himself to be gone forever. and then hyde comes back and tells him nah dude well work this out. i really just loved the subtle build-up looks where hyde is looking at things like the letter jekyll was leaving and such. it was also very touching and really showed hyde's heart through all the huffing and puffing
lomcia (princess_lom)
I like him i hope he never change
Rebel that was so sad scene , so emotional!
I really enjoy as I said Albert Ode, I hope to see him more offten, hes charming
Archangel
I think somebody has her own crush.
lomcia (princess_lom)
yeah, on all trolls Albert and Hyde
MK_Wizard
I felt is was high time the world got a version of Hyde who was good and still "Hyde" enough. In every adaptation I've seen, Hyde is always bad. And the very concept Robert Louis Stevenson had on good and evil was deep at the time, but now, we know that it's not true. What I did was bold and maybe "wrong" to some people, but it's the truth.
Archangel
I like how both Doc and Hyde have a plausible and sensible mix of good and bad personal qualities. Their interplay is more akin to 'The Odd Couple" than the usual metaphors of id vs superego or drug addiction that I see in other adaptations of the story.
MK_Wizard
Ha! Well, I like to think that by troll standards, Hyde doe faced.
I did that purpose too. If we did what was expected and made Jekyll completely submit to Hyde, that would be expected and dull.
No offence to webcomic writers who take that route.
Archangel
Well, tropes can either be used to a good purpose, subverted to a good purpose, or just blindly followed.
khkddn
Robert Louis Stevenson's take wasn't true?
MK_Wizard
If anything, I can tell you all this: between the two of them, Hyde is more dependent on Jekyll than Jekyll is on Hyde.
lomcia (princess_lom)
MK I really enjoy your story, and I would love to chat more but my eyes don't listen to me :< I wish you all the best, meaby when I'll wake up I will answer for questions which people left as a feedback for you
MK_Wizard
It was true for the psychological view of human nature at the time. So he was just as right as everyone else. But now, we have come a long way with psychology.
So yes and no @khkddn
Thanks @lomcia (princess_lom)
Archangel
It's been a long time since I read the original, but I seem to recall interpreting Jeckyl as the superego and Hyde as the id
Which could be considered good and evil, respectively, in a Victorian mind? Maybe? Not really my period of history, so I don't feel comfortable being definite.
khkddn
I interpreted it as subverting what people of the time thought the "professional gentlemanly man" was supposed to be
Archangel
Hmm. I see that.
MK_Wizard
It could be interpreted many ways. That's the beauty of the original tale.
khkddn
the victorian professional gentleman was supposed to be all good and proper, but here we have this guy turning into an evil man at night
but that's pretty far removed from mk's version
MK_Wizard
Jekyll and Hyde had a lot of complex themes when it came to duality don't forget such as having dark secrets one would be very ashamed of for the Victorian age especially.
khkddn
it's a happier story for one thing. i like how your writing isn't mean-spirited mk.
like there are mean people who do terrible things, but it's never framed as a funny thing or as just something that happens in life that we can't change
RebelVampire
yes i agree, i like this is a more upbeat version. not to say sad things dont happen, but i dont get the impression that its trying to be dark and edgy just to be dark and edgy. sad things happen right when they should
MK_Wizard
I'm not into meanness. I find at one point in the media, being mean got passed off as cool. I don't like that.
mathtans
Little one is asleep in crib (again). ^^ Happening place tonight! I got as far as end of Act 5.
RebelVampire
hi math~!
MK_Wizard
Hello!
mathtans
Fave bit of what I've read was probably at the ball, when we get the extra whammy of who Emma was with. I hadn't expected that. Then when Jekyll is trying to shrug it off, Emily interjects, that was awesome. I really like Emily.
MK_Wizard
Nice to see an Emily fan. I feared people overlooked her.
Archangel
She's a keeper, for sure
I had actually forgotten about her since we haven't seen her in a while. If it's any consolation, I do that to real people too.
RebelVampire
oh really? i 100% expected emma to be with him cause the world was really intent on kicking jekyll down. what i did enjoy was her trying to put all the blame on jekyll tho. cause that is something real ppl do when they get caught as such.
mathtans
Emily is the kick in the pants that Jekyll needs sometimes. I also like Lucy for similar reasons, actually (standing up for herself, whereas with Emily it's for her uncle).
MK_Wizard
@RebelVampire Definitely. I see it happen all to often with cheaters.
mathtans
Rebel: I guess I hadn't anticipated that plot point to still be dangling. Really felt bad for Jekyll at the start on account of kicking him when he was down though, like ouch. Also, agree, it was true to form.
Archangel
The hardest thing to blame is one's self, after all
RebelVampire
i appreciated that emily didnt forgive jekyll for the tennis thing and for not standing up for her. cause that was a point where i was glad she was gonna stop being an enabler of jekyll's flaws in a more slap in the face wake up call kind of way
mathtans
Like, talking could still be a thing. I know that sometimes people avoid, but when you're proposed to, I think that's the time to talk.
MK_Wizard
In Emily's defence, what Jekyll did was cowardly and hurtful.
Archangel
Def
mathtans
Rebel: Yeah, I'm kind of in the middle of that now, but that hurt. Since she was always standing up for him.
MK_Wizard
And don't forget. Emily's a teenager. She will have teen moments.
Archangel
He did correct his mistake and learn from it. Credit where it's due.
mathtans
Oooh, spoilers. (j/k)
Archangel
Oh right, sorry
hehe
mathtans
Heh, it's cool, talk about all the stuff. I do this every week, and never manage to clear the archive half the time.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 2. Two major themes of the comic are what it means to be a better person in the face of personal flaws and how one might learn to be better. Insofar, what has been your favorite moment of growth for any of the characters showcased in the comic? What about this moment struck you as particularly strong? In the larger picture, do you think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde really will continue to help each other to grow? Further, in what ways do you think the two characters can grow further as people? Alternatively, might the two reach a limit where they are no longer able to help each other in this manner? What flaws might both still continue to deal with long term? Overall, how do you think these changes will affect how both characters deal with life, and what can we personally learn from it as readers?
MK_Wizard
I'm afraid there's no way I can answer this without giving things away
Archangel
Good God, where to start. Give me a minute.
mathtans
It's kind of interesting, because Hyde never even had a memory before the transformation. So in some sense, he's a blank slate, and thus everything is growth.
In the beginning, Hyde was doing it for himself, but he inadvertantly helped people. Some part of him must have liked that, because now he does it to help and fight against the system.
Archangel
Okay, so obviously each of our protagonists has a massive, salient character flaw that comes out fairly early on. Jeckyl is too afraid of confrontation, and would rather get shafted than make a scene. Meanwhile Hyde, as @mathtans noted, is very self-centered--in rather a childish way, which makes sense in the context that Mat noted.
Each is well-placed to advise the other and point out that he's being a tool and why.
And -- very importantly -- they can't ignore each other
While each man is far from perfect, we're already seeing them improve in the face of the other's prodding, and finding themselves happier for it
mathtans
They have much to "reflect" on.
Archangel
/facedesk
Bravo, sir
Now I have to wipe soda off my monitor
MK_Wizard
I don't deny that there are tons of metaphors and symbolism in my story.
khkddn
there were earlier times when jekyll became more of a courageous person but i liked in act 8 when lanyon showed up at his door pretending to be friendly and jekyll is not having ANY of it
RebelVampire
be careful with that soda cause math is here to be the pun master
Archangel
Noted
Anyway, to @khkddn 's point, I wonder if it's because it was just the two of them? Maybe J's problem is more social anxiety? Interesting thought.
RebelVampire
yeah seeing jekyll just being like nope was a really satisfying in that moment. like seeing your little boy suddenly grow up.
MK_Wizard
It's a lot of things and it's complex which will be explained more and more as the story goes on.
RebelVampire
my favorite moment of growth is actually when hyde apologizes to lucy. because apologies are legit one of the hardest things to do i think for ppl. because thats a lot of stabbing for the personal ego, and the more prideful, the harder it is. so heres hyde, probably one of the most prideful ppl in the comic, admitting that he said some messed up shit and screwed up. that was a beautiful moment cause taking that many stabs to his ego was a showcase of how far hed come that hed go through such a grand gesture and damage his pride.
mathtans
Hyde also really has no filter when he's talking, while Jekyll has like, massive overthinking of everything before he speaks. It's a live-in-the-moment attitude versus thinking about the future. So if there is a "limit" where they can't help each other, I imagine Jekyll would see it coming.
MK_Wizard
They are opposites @mathtans
mathtans
True. I guess I'm saying that's conveyed well.
Archangel
@RebelVampire it also shows just how deeply Hyde cares for Lucy, that he's willing to basically abase himself like that.
khkddn
i agree w @RebelVampire about that scene, it shows that even if hyde is an opposite to jekyll personality wise, he isn't morally opposite and can be a good person who admits mistakes
mathtans
Speaking of opposites, here's a fun thing I realized. Jekyll loses his job, and his girl, and we feel badly for him. That thug guy Tom ALSO loses his "job" and his "girl" (if shaking down stores can be a job), but because he's on the wrong side of the law (and a jerk), we don't feel badly for him.
Archangel
Well, neither of their flaws are really things that need to be completely removed. They just need to be moderated. Hyde needs to learn a bit of impulse control, and Jeckyl needs to learn to loosen up a bit.
mathtans
Yeah, "Tom" might be the moral opposite.
Archangel
But neither of their attitudes towards life are bad per se, so long as they're not taken to extremes... as they have been doing
Huh, interesting
Or perhaps "there but for the grace of God go I" type of thing?
MK_Wizard
@mathtans Tom is a bad person. Do you all remember how he hit Lucy? Imagine how much worse it would have been if Hyde wasn't there.
RebelVampire
yeah im really interested to see if jekyll's biggest challenge in growing is moderation. cause i didnt entirely disagree with him in certain contexts. like at the party, i was kind of on his side that sometimes just letting things go is better and that theres a time and place for certain...coversations as it were.
Archangel
I'm amazed Lucy doesn't carry a knife or something. Most prostitutes in cities carry something for self-defense (if they're smart), and the habit would likely carry over into working at a bar. Plus Victorian ladies' clothes are REALLY good for concealing weapons. You have to see it to believe it
mathtans
Yeah, jerk as I indicated. Just, similar stuff happened to him. Just thought it was interesting. He's more evil than Hyde is, for sure.
Archangel
Oh absolutely
khkddn
tom doesnt have a cool top hat like hyde and that's why i'll never root for him even if he weren't a bad person(edited)
MK_Wizard
@Archangel Lucy does own a knife, but she knows Tom would have overpowered her.
Archangel
If she'd given him a chance. But I see your point.
The hardest part of hurting or killing someone is actually deciding to do so.
Damaging somebody is terrifyingly easy... if you can bring yourself to do it.
Anyway. off topic.
MK_Wizard
There's a reason she has scars. Like Lucy said, her getting slapped wasn't the worst assault a man had ever done on her. She is brave and tough, but she's not super strong. Lots of men can overpower her and have, but she's not prostitute. She's a waitress, but she is poor so that still makes her an easy target.
Archangel
She started out as a sex worker, though, right? Or am I misremembering.
mathtans
Again, to be clear, I don't think anyone should root for Tom. Just, he had similar stuff happen and approached things in a way that neither Jekyll nor Hyde would. (Very wrongly.)
khkddn
lucy would also need an exit strategy if she used the knife on tom. she would probably have to run away and lay low, which could be more dangerous than staying with him.
mathtans
Lucy is kickass. I liked her remark of an apology shouldn't have a "but".
MK_Wizard
She was a showgirl and eventually had to sort of become a prostitute, but she isn't one anymore.
Archangel
Very true, hadn't thought that through
Seebee
is here to show support
Woo, go MK
Archangel
lol
MK_Wizard
Hey Seebee!
Seebee
Yoooo~
MK_Wizard
Glad you could join us.
You rock!
Seebee
GASP, I'MMA ROCK?!
looks at self
no wonder I got craters on my skiiiin
Archangel
Hope you're a pet rock. Then you get a nice box with straw and everything
MK_Wizard
Just because Lucy is no muscle woman doesn't mean she's a pushover. And now that she doesn't have to submit to people to make a living, she sure as heck never does.
RebelVampire
yeah i think that was a great line, @mathtans cause its really such a simplistic but smart way of weeding a good apology from a bad apology
MK_Wizard
Her having her body belong to herself again is something that is very precious to her.
Archangel
Understandably
Not many people could have gone through as much bad as Lucy has and come out walking erect, as the saying goes. I think that's why admire her so much. I don't think I could ever be that strong.
mathtans
(I'm continuing my read in the background, btw. The April Fools strip with the green hair is a riot. Speaking of bodies belonging to other people.)
khkddn
yeah lucy is one of my favorite characters, she's cool
MK_Wizard
She had to be. No one else was there for her. Back in the day, being of mixed ethnicity was a taboo.
That was the reason she had it rough. It's not right, but... it was not uncommon.
khkddn
if a random person during the time saw lucy would they assume she is mixed? or does she pass as not being mixed?
i'm wondering if this would change how she is treated
Archangel
Speaking for the USA, it depended entirely on the place and the person's specific appearance
But rarely would it be ignored
MK_Wizard
Ha. Well.... she's a cartoon, but if she were real, yes. You would tell because her skin is a bit too dark, she has the eyes and lips, as well as the physique.
mathtans
Just an aside on the topic of cartoons, I feel like it takes a while to draw the hairdos. ^^
MK_Wizard
She can't pass off not being mixed. She's one of those very obvious cases.
Oh ho ho ho. Jekyll's hair IS tedious to draw, but it's worth it because it makes him stand out.
Archangel
Also, her hair isn't right. One of the more dominant traits of African heritage is the way hair behaves--very bristly and stand-outy (I don't know the right word). To get it to flow like Lucy's does, one needs a good deal of product every morning. Or so a friend told me once.
mathtans
Well done, MK. Also for having Emily's be similar, what with the family resemblance.
MK_Wizard
Thanks
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. In the current story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have become aware of a mysterious alchemist causing trouble. Who exactly is this mysterious alchemist? Why is this alchemist helping Governor Carew? Exactly what do you think this project is that the board of governors is looking to fund by using the alchemist’s talents? Do you think Mr. Hyde’s previous actions will put the board on extra alert for their investigations? How might this affect Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll’s success in stopping Carew’s villainy, if so? Alternatively, how might the various things the alchemist is able to do (like create gold) change the characters’ views on how the world works? All in all, how do you feel this arc of cases will wind up be solved (or go unsolved)?
Archangel
I do know that one of the standard "tests" of somebody's background back in the bad old days was to look at their hair, precisely because this trait is so dominant.
mathtans
Well, I'm obviously not there yet, but I feel like this was set up very well with the mercury poisoning stuff happening in the background of what I have read.
Archangel
Well, creating gold is always a bad idea when the economy is based on gold. Every mage's guild I've ever seen in any universe has a big fat rule against it
MK_Wizard
In Lucy's case, it's her skin, eyes and lips. Plus, her body type as she got older. Don't forget, coloured people go far beyond the hair and skin.
But back to the subject, it was explicitly stated that making your own gold is 100% illegal.
Archangel
So they have to be either utterly stupid or they don't care about devaluing the currency. Not something for men of means (and thus knowledge of at least some finance and economics) to take lightly
My bad, but my second point stands re: their scheme with the unfortunate chickens
RebelVampire
youre making a huge assumption they understand how the economy works. XD i dont get the impression most of the men of means care, as long as they get theirs and get to have their fancy stuff.
MK_Wizard
Plus, the board of governors have a lot of influence.
mathtans
What about making gold for someone else?
Archangel
I'd like to argue with you, RV, but I can't.
Presumably charged as an accessory, @mathtans
MK_Wizard
@Seebee, you got anything to add to this?
Archangel
Given that we're talking chemistry, though, the other classic thing that comes up aside from gold is some sort of immortality potion. I don't recall any hints to that effect, though.
mathtans
"You made a gold chain for my locket?" "Yes, now it's an accessory."
Seebee
Hmmm... not at the moment
I will be honest, I am ded inside from being out all day))
mathtans
I'm reminded of how Jekyll's first attempts at his formula involved trying almost all elements on the periodic table. He must have certain resources that might be helpful for going after an alchemist.
MK_Wizard
That and Jekyll has the most valuable resource of all: his own genius
Archangel
Mmm. He can certainly analyze any samples or whatnot that Hyde acquires.
RebelVampire
maybe thatll be the next arc, where theyre trying to find an immortality potion.
khkddn
i imagine the alchemist is helping governor carew because he's deeply involved w the plan somehow. it'd be weird if he were just a hired alchemist, because, what're they gonna pay him in? gold?? couldn't he just make the gold himself
Archangel
Perhaps the deal is that they'll put him beyond the law
So he can actually get away with it
No point to crime if you can't enjoy the result
MK_Wizard
It's definitely something big and it also shows how heinous the board of governors really are.
RebelVampire
i kind of think the previous arc has made it more difficult though. cause if i was on the board, i would def be on high alert. all it takes is one guy saying "hey i saw hyde snooping around stopping our gold operation"
MK_Wizard
Actually, nobody can say or do anything.
The alchemist burnt the evidence and place to the ground.
mathtans
Everything probably points back to Carew. That guy is shady as anything. (Incidentally, good job emphasizing his character with that statue debacle near the start. Not a nice man.)
RebelVampire
i can only think the alchemist is in it for the secret project. cause i agree with khkddn, its not like the alchemist needs gold
Archangel
I don't think we've seen any bent cops to this point, which means that the Governors either need enough evidence to fool honest cops (not so easy to fake), or to keep mum
MK_Wizard
It's a bit of both. Not enough evidence and some cops are crooked much to Sgt. Drumwell's dismay.
Archangel
There's always a few, and they always get promoted. >_<
Kei Esteban
Hello! Sorry I'm Late!
MK_Wizard
It's cool!
Archangel
*Hi ho
khkddn
heya
Kei Esteban
Thanks
RebelVampire
tbf its not like these are modern csi times. so theres only so many ways they can analyze evidence in the first place
MK_Wizard
Exactly
khkddn
do they even have fingerprint technology at this point?
Archangel
The techniques were fully established by that point, but not so widely accepted
MK_Wizard
They do have a way of detecting fingerprints, but fire destroys everything.
mathtans
Gotta make themselves a time machine.
Archangel
Wiki "Henry Classification System" sometime for an interesting insight into pre-fingerprint policing
khkddn
ah well to get anything out of ashes i think they would need chemical analysis that doesn't exist yet. it'd prolly be faster to build a time machine yep
Archangel
The problem with fire is that it alters the chemical composition of everything
MK_Wizard
Exactly. The alchemist knew precisely what he was doing.
Archangel
So unless you have research data, it's pretty much impossible to ID the source substances.
khkddn
they need chemical analysis that doesn't even exist in OUR time yet
Archangel
Well, the good guys do have a genius (al)chemist on their side...
Speaking of, @MK_Wizard , is there an actual technical distinction between chemistry and alchemy, or is it just po-tay-to/po-tah-to?
mathtans
Maybe someone will Hyde the evidence.
MK_Wizard
Yes and no.
khkddn
if only the chickens could speak english. then the truth would be out there
MK_Wizard
To explain, alchemy has some spirituality and magical properties behind it. Basically, it was the stepping stone to chemistry. People discovered that magic did have a science behind it and upon further research, people discovered that magic had a direct link to nature.
khkddn
i have to work on a school project and this is distracting me way too much so i'm gonna go. it's been fun chatting!
Archangel
glhf
MK_Wizard
With that, human beings who have no magic invented a way to "use magic" without having any themselves. Alchemy. They would use ways of manipulating nature in supernatural ways and through that, they discovered how to make chemicals and made other marvels through science.
@khkddn thanks for joining us
Of course, it wasn't just humans who used magic. Other races did too.
Kei Esteban
Ah, Other than Trolls and Humans, do you have any interest in having other Races show up?
mathtans
Interesting bringing that up, what with trolls being a thing common enough to be known with police. I wondered too.(edited)
MK_Wizard
Definitely. In fact, you already saw two and didn't know it.
Remember the short guy Biggs? He's a gnome.
Archangel
Oh cool
Kei Esteban
Ah Neat ^_^
Archangel
I still say he needs a buddy named Wedge
Kei Esteban
XD
RebelVampire
thats interesting. cause i was curious why everyone was like shrugging to the presence of trolls
XD
MK_Wizard
The other one is Tyler the redhead, but what HE is... you're going to see
mathtans
Now I'm picturing Biggs renting himself out to stand in gardens during the day.
Archangel
"If I parked a tank outside your office, after a week it would be just another car." --one of my vet buddies
Kei Esteban
I look forward to finding out ^_^
Archangel
(as in my buddy who's a vet. I was never in the Service)
Also, London in our world is one of the most metropolitan environments on earth. I bet it's the same in the story.
MK_Wizard
Most definitely,
mathtans
I now kind of wonder about interracial breeding.
MK_Wizard
It's like the "New York" of Europe in my comic. You'll find anyone there.
Archangel
Just like in real life
MK_Wizard
You've seen it already. Sgt. Drumwell is half troll and half human.
mathtans
Like, troll and human must be a thing given how Hyde and Lucy.... oh, yeah? Hummmm.
MK_Wizard
Hence his human appearance, but he has yellow fangs and his eyes.
Kei Esteban
Settings like that are always nice too see
MK_Wizard
It's also why he's compassionate. He was lucky because his parents were very wealthy so their money protected them. Plus, he passes off as a human mostly, but his eyes, teeth and height give him away.
Archangel
Well, it's for MK to say for sure, but one of the definitions of separate species is the inability to interbreed. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule. It would be interesting to see Hyde and Lucy have little ones, though. In due course.
Kei Esteban
indeed
RebelVampire
are laws applied equally or is there inequality as far as different species go? like is there special laws that only exist for trolls, etc.?
mathtans
Actually, Sgt Drumwell is their child. Eventually Jekyll perfects the time machine and sends him back.
MK_Wizard
lol no
Archangel
lmao
MK_Wizard
Here's how it works. It's generally a taboo socially, but if you're very rich, you can get away with a lot. You just won't be respected for it.
For example... there's another non-human you saw without knowing it. Utterson's redheaded wife Camilla. She's a wizard.
AND he married her without making her convert to his faith/human lifestyle. He allows her to continue living openly as a wizard and practicing her culture.
Archangel
Fascinating. And again, makes sense that people would regard sentient species the way they regarded other races at the time.
Kei Esteban
Well he is a Great guy, so that's not too surprising he would be respectful of her completely
MK_Wizard
Her hair was also an Easter Egg to her race. In old lore, red heads were often thought to be witches.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 4. Despite working together, Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll still argue quite often and risk their own safety a lot. How might their shared injury and pain help or hurt their ability to function in their own daily lives in the future? Do you believe that at some point the two’s shared identity of sorts will be revealed? If so, how do you envision this coming about? Given the growing relationship between Mr. Hyde and Lucy, will Mr. Hyde be compelled to tell her at some point? What about Dr. Jekyll with his niece and nephew? Do you think the two’s shared arrangement with the body will work long term, or will they at some point need to make alterations to their living situation? Ultimately, how do you feel their living arrangement will affect their future adventures, whatever you think those future adventures might be?
Kei Esteban
@MK_Wizard Oh no! They are on too me! (I'm a Red head XD)(edited)
MK_Wizard
Ok, for this... I leave entirely up to all of you. So... bring on the fan theories!
Archangel
Let's see. Well, Lucy absolutely has a right to know. How she'll react, I have no idea.
As to Emily & Will... I think Emily should be briefed in, if only so she won't freak out if Hyde has to come get them to prevent a kidnapping or something by the opposition.
MK_Wizard
Keep in mind. Nobody knows yet.
Nobody except Louis and he's not talking.
Archangel
Right. I think Lucy can keep a secret. Emily... honestly don't know her well enough to say.
RebelVampire
yeah i think as far as a long term arrangement, its not gonna work. because assuming hyde wants to marry lucy at some point, thatd be problematic. even worse, what if jekyll meets somebody. they are fooling themselves if they think this can work out indefinitely. so jekyll is gonna need to put that genius to work.
Kei Esteban
I think it would be best in the long run for those closest to them to know. Lucy and Emily would be a great start indeed
Archangel
Knowledge of the situation would be all that Carew & Lanyon need to discredit anything Jeckyl says, ever, so it certainly can't become public knowledge.
MK_Wizard
Lanyon is out of the picture for good. It's the one thing I can confirm. He's defeated for good.
Archangel
Yay!
He was a good bad guy, though
Kei Esteban
I love how he effectively defeated himself! XD
MK_Wizard
That was the point. And it was also karma. Lanyon got successful by riding on Jekyll's tail and taking everything that was his.
In the end, doing this was his undoing.
Sure he didn't have Jekyll's money to do stuff, but it didn't make being a skunk ok especially because Jekyll really did see him as a friend and would have hlped him.
Kei Esteban
It was such a Creative way to end the conflict ^_^
Archangel
I don't think he'd believe you if you'd told him that to his face. People like that seem to get that way because they assume that everybody's out to get everybody. At least in my (blessedly limited) contact with the species.
Kei Esteban
That's an unfortunate way to look at the world. By that i mean the "everybody out to get everybody" bit.(edited)
MK_Wizard
I wanted to show that there are good and bad people from every social standing.
Basically, different kinds of good and bad people.
mathtans
Back. (Had to see to the little one briefly.)
MK_Wizard
Aww
mathtans
In terms of people knowing, would they believe without seeing the transformation?
Archangel
Good question
MK_Wizard
Would you? I don't think so.
mathtans
It's not like people have iPhones to video record it.
Archangel
That might help them keep the secret
mathtans
I mean, there's the argument of they haven't been in the same room together.
RebelVampire
nah i highly doubt it. in fact, far more likely the person claiming this is a thing that happened would get sent to an asylum
MK_Wizard
Yeah, but... who would believe the two share a body that transforms without seeing it?
mathtans
Though I agree with Rebel that they'll need to figure something out so that relationship things don't become an issue.
Someone with MPD?
MK_Wizard
Not talking (teasing)
I will share one tidbit... At the end of the true end of the story, there will be no loose ends.
For anything. And that is all.
mathtans
Just got to the bit with Lanyon, btw, that you were referencing earlier. That was very clever, coming full circle, and good final shot of him in the mirror.
RebelVampire
actually ya know tbf, didnt louis take some of the potion. you could use louis to show its a real thing
in the sense of the transformation
mathtans
Crazy theory time: Jekyll figures out how to shift Hyde to share a body with someone else instead. Hyde and Lucy decide to become "one", and ride off into the sunset.
MK_Wizard
I will say this now... no.
That sounds romantic on paper, but that would actually be bad.
Because how would they be a couple?
mathtans
Kissing mirrors.
Archangel
That'd make it like that one movie where the knight and the lady each shapeshift, but they alternate states at dawn and can never be together. That was one weird movie.
Good curse, though
MK_Wizard
That sounds like the worst kind of hell for two people deeply in love. To be so close, yet completely separate.
Kei Esteban
@MK_Wizard like Garnet, from Steven Universe? XD
Archangel
Actually, what Mat describes would be a truly horrible curse for a couple. I might use that someday.
MK_Wizard
Garnet is not Ruby and Sapphie per se. She is the embodiment of their love.
mathtans
Yeah, you're not wrong. Okay, so Hyde and Poole...?
Archangel
Poole's not getting any younger
What happens when one half dies?
MK_Wizard
They both die.
Kei Esteban
@MK_Wizard Very True (I guess we can't use Gem logic here)(edited)
mathtans
Yeah, I think that was stated. When they hurt, the other hurts too.
RebelVampire
yeah i feel the fact they share pain and death is gonna be weaponized against them. cause if i needed to get rid of hyde, id go for jekyll if i knew that fact. cause whats jekyll gonna do? slap me a little?
Kei Esteban
then how about Hyde and Carew? (Hyde just takes over full time)
MK_Wizard
You all really hit the nail on the head that them sharing a body, but not lives and such is going to become a challenge.
Archangel
Good point. Though you'd have to bump Jeckyl right away rather than keeping him around. Come sunset...
mathtans
Just to talk about Emily again (because she's cool), I feel like she'd understand, if the truth came out. Though I wonder if she'd be hurt that Jekyll didn't say anything sooner.
Archangel
Ooo, I like Kei's idea. Not sure it works that way, though.
MK_Wizard
And I will disprove the theory now.... Hyde and Jekyll cannot suddenly be shifted to another person. Neither soul is a "disease" you can hand onto someone else.
Archangel
@mathtans I agree. My concern would be whether she can keep a secret. She is a teenage girl, after all.
MK_Wizard
They are a person.
Archangel
And keeping a cool secret is hard at any age
MK_Wizard
They are two people.
Kei Esteban
indeed
mathtans
Archangel: She's pretty mature for her age though. Granted, she's also pretty outspoken. I don't think she'd say anything intentionally, but it might come out in the heart of the moment or something. (Which is maybe why she could accept not having been told.)
RebelVampire
i think emily could keep a secret. now will on the otherhand
MK_Wizard
So all theories of them being put onto someone else will not come to pass because that's impossible.
RebelVampire
will i would believe couldnt keep a secret cause hes even younger(edited)
Archangel
Perhaps with the materials to 'construct' a new body, and the proper spellwork, each can be embodied separately? Sort of a siamese twin operation?
Will is right out at his age.
Kei Esteban
Will being a kid, might even think it's cool (Which he would be right)(edited)
mathtans
So maybe one of them decides to sacrifice themselves for the good of the two of them. Jekyll already tried that once.
MK_Wizard
I won't say much about who can keep a secret, but in my experience, it goes with personality not age.
Archangel
I will say that almost nobody under the age of 10 can keep a secret in my experience. But aside from that, agreed.
mathtans
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Nellie couldn't keep a secret.
MK_Wizard
You've also seen that Hyde would never have that. He's not an active killer. And he loves Jekyll as a brother. He wouldn't kill him if he asked him to.
And taking over essentially does that.
Archangel
I'm not sure Nellie's bright enough to grasp the core concept XD
Kei Esteban
XD
Archangel
Here's a really trippy question, MK: do J&D have separate souls, or do they share one?
mathtans
(And I had to go to the cast page to look up the name, and now I see how "half troll" is right there in Drumwell's bio, nice.)
MK_Wizard
They have separate souls.
Archangel
Obviously their minds are separate, but I'm questioning their spiritual state in the technical sense
Okay, so it's reasonable to theorize that they could be separated and embodied separately. It would certainly take high magic, though.
MK_Wizard
The Hyde Formula has magical properties. For example, did you know that in reincarnation, the soul splits? Hence why some people who get reincarnated can be reincarnated as multiple people.
Archangel
I've never heard that.
mathtans
Well, if the original intention was a sort of "Disney" Jekyll and Hyde, maybe there will be a Disney ending? Somehow?
Archangel
Pillars of Eternity has this whole thing about souls fragmenting, but that's more like chips off a rock over time.
MK_Wizard
In the case of Jekyll and Hyde, Hyde came from a piece of Jekyll's own soul, but it became its own unique being.
Yes, You got it!
Archangel
Makes sense.
MK_Wizard
Keep in mind, even Disney endings aren't always perfect.
RebelVampire
the disney ending will be hyde and lucy riding off in a carriage with the just got married sign and jekyll will come to cause they decided to just make it a threesome
although that joke aside i wonder if jekyll and lucy will ever interact
MK_Wizard
Uh, no lol
Lucy is not Jekyll's type and Hyde would not share his woman with anyone.
Nor would Jekyll do that.
Jekyll is as monogamous as they come lol.
mathtans
Hmmm, and is it too late to ship Lucy and Emma?
Archangel
RV is right insofar as it would be interesting to see how Jeckyl and Lucy get along socially. I imagine that after some initial sounding out, they'll manage well enough. After all, Lucy is a lady and Jeckyl is a gentleman. That goes a long way.
lmao
Kei Esteban
It would be nice to see Jekyll meet someone new, that is actually good for him
Archangel
^
MK_Wizard
@mathtans That ship is solely wish fulfilment and a fan fantasy.
RebelVampire
i more wonder the social interaction cause that could make hyde jealous. if jekyll and lucy got along even if it was totally platonic
Archangel
Actually, someone like Emily would be very good for Jeckyl... in the sense of personality, not age.
mathtans
(I always ship the ladies... ) And actually, the thought that it's a fan fantasy already amuses me.
Archangel
Cue the "I ship it, I don't care" song
MK_Wizard
I made this comic knowing people would do ships if the comic caught on. All I say is that, as long as you accept that it is not the official storyline.
mathtans
Maybe Jekyll can be the best man at the Hyde/Lucy wedding?
Archangel
Only if Poole is the Father of the Bride
Otherwise J would slide down to second place IMO
mathtans
What's official is definitely up to the author. All the best with it! It's an interesting take.
MK_Wizard
Thanks
RebelVampire

Tale of the Nine Tailed KDrama Review
—
—
Bingo Card for Tale of the Nine Tailed
Synopsis: The mythical nine-tailed fox, or gumiho, Lee Yeon had to settle in the city many centuries ago. Able to transform into human form, he eradicates supernatural beings that threaten the mortal world. His real aim is to find the reincarnation of his lost first love. The talented television producer Nam Ji Ah works in a show that features urban myths. In the past, her parents were involved in a mysterious car accident and disappeared, and she suspects that Lee Yeon might be connected with this accident. The half-brother to Lee Yeon is the captivating Lee Rang. Despite being half-human himself, he harbors a deep-seated contempt for all people. For sport, he will unleash his seductive prowess upon his human-du-jour, by promising to grant them their wishes, only to trick them into paying a hefty price for their earthly desires.
Overall Main Plot: Rating - 7 out of 10
Okay, I think the main thing about the plot is that it’s interesting. I’m not sure how to describe it, but it’s definitely an interesting fantasy drama with a different type of plot-line. The main antagonist is the Imoogi, but having a piece of the enemy within Ji-Ah really changed the game because now, it’s about history repeating itself and Yeon not wanting to kill her a second time and it was actually interesting to see it progress. I also loved the relationship between the characters, both the past and the present, and seeing how they play out. Whether it’s Rang and Yuri or Rang and Yeon’s, it’s interesting to see how it all comes together in a bigger picture and, again, having “history repeat itself.” But that being said, it was also super cliche—which is expected of a kdrama, but with the fantasy element, it’s even somehow more cliche with how things played out (just take a look at the bingo card because it shows). There were also a couple of other things that bothered me, regarding the main plot...
Lack of Emotional Bonding - maybe it was just me, but I was not super invested as to what was happening throughout the plot. It just felt like I had a feeling how things were gonna play out, especially when a part of the Imoogi showed itself in episode 2. About the climax of the plot (when Yeon and the Imoogi battled and died), I was a bit surprised at his choice, but I wasn’t outright sobbing. But also, because of how many dramas I’ve watched, my word shouldn’t be taken for it.
The Talupia’s Role - this lady.... knows all. But tell me why... she didn’t do anything to help them until the end and then she ended up being turned into stone. I just thought her role was interesting because it didn’t really help the characters until the end to help Yeon kill the Imoogi. While I liked her character (a strong woman who makes her own decisions), her character in relation to the plot felt so loose, even though she had a lot of knowledge that should’ve been shared. I don’t know; there are mixed opinions about her.
Characters: Rating - 8 out of 10
↣ Lee Yeon [played by Lee Dongwook] - he really just ate mint chocolate chip ice cream all the time; I thought his character was really endearing, especially since he’s def the romantic type (considering he wanted for his love to be reincarnated for like 600 years). But there were a lot of actions that I thought did not match up with his character, like: the time he tried to push Ji-Ah away “for her safety” (yeah, because that always definitely will work better than communication..... anyways) or the time he told Rang he regretted saving him that definitely did not sound like a joke. Ugh, there were just minor inconsistencies with how he was supposed to be written as a character, but overall, I did like him and root for him considering how awful the antagonist is. However, there is a small note, which will be mentioned in the romance and additional notes section for later....
↣ Nam Ji-Ah [played by Jo Bo Ah] - I was annoyed with her character at first, but I realized that I really liked how she took matters into her own hands without fear. Her independence is something that shines throughout the drama: she can work independently, but knows when to ask for help and work with others. She’s also driven for her work as a PD about urban legends and really wanted to find her parents, as well as how it all worked together. My favorite moment of her is when she is in her “fear nightmare” (whatever it’s called) and she managed to get herself out on her own because she realized that it wasn’t right/real. While it may not seemed like she did much, you also have to remember this is a fantasy drama and she’s just the human and realistically speaking, what power do you have over a literal deity? I also want to add she did less as the drama went, but she still handled things well after they played out rather than be completely helpless, so I’ll give some props to the writers for that.
↣ Lee Rang [played by Kim Bum] - okay, why is he the soft bad boy with a dark past that we’re all in love with? I think all the viewers can agree with me that Lee Rang is just... it. I believe it’s his comeback drama after five (ish) years and he did a fantastic job with this character. His character is probably the most complex in the drama, especially since he’s got abandonment issues and still wants to be loved. I think the only time I was close to tears was when they decided to kill him off to have Yeon return. I don’t know how to describe it, but he really stole the hearts of many with his heart of gold. He just has some issues he needed to resolve and we were all rooting for his redemption, only to be disappointed as he died off.
↣ Imoogi (also called Terry?) [played by Lee Taeri] - this man is completely insane. I think the actor did a great job with this character because this character... is so unlikeable, but it’s understandable as to where he lies in the main plot. Oh my god, when he said Ji-Ah’s supposed to be his bride to make him feel loved, I was laughing because he said the most cliche shit to her and thought he could just... manipulate and threaten her to like him. Like, sir... if you want to be loved, maybe don’t try to approach her that way??? But also, he doesn’t know better—literally, he’s part snake or something and it adds up. He was annoying as a character, but he made a great antagonist. I just didn’t really like how he was used to drag things out further because he really did not have... any redeemable traits.
Personal Notes: I think one thing about this drama regarding the characters is that they all fit together in the bigger picture. It’s clear how they work together and how they don’t, and it’s satisfying to see how they all play out as the plot was further developed. I really do wish there were more scenes of just the Lee brothers, especially since Rang was so deprived of that as Yeon distanced himself without a real explanation to Rang. I also would have liked if Ji-Ah had more scenes with her parents, considering that she had been trying to find them for so long—only for them not to be at the wedding??? Only for Ji-ah to nearly die for Yeon again??? Only to have their scenes cut out more and more, even though they are so important to her character??? Writers, explain how these dots are supposed to connect.
Romance: Rating - 7 out of 10
It’s clear that their romance works in this drama. While I wasn’t super invested with their romance, I still found it cute because they did a lot of dates and actually progressed as a couple. I loved it when Ji-Ah looked at him when he kissed her and was like “don’t project your feelings from your first love on me because I’m Ji-Ah, not A-Reum (whatever the name of his first love was).” It only got better from there because they were actually getting to know each other and date (like NORMAL PEOPLE). I’m also giving them bonus points because they didn’t do that weird break-up sequence with a time skip during the duration of their building romance (I’m not counting the time he was gonna distance himself to help her because they weren’t officially in a relationship or the fact that he died and she was waiting for him to return because it’s not an actual breakup).
However, I’m not a fan of the “dying for you” trope; that was one thing that rubbed me the wrong way because Yeon really died for her, only for her to offer herself up for his reincarnation (thank you Rang for stopping her). Another thing that really bothered me about them is the fact that Yeon fell in love with a child—not exactly a child, but: how do you fall in love with someone you watched grow up? I understand that because he’s a deity, he doesn’t age, but.... dude. A human? Really? (Goblin war flashbacks). Also, for a main couple, they were kind of boring. I mentioned it earlier that I wasn’t super interested in their relationship and that also made me tune out a bit during the main plot events (which is probably what made me less emotionally invested).
Second Plot/B-Plot and Secondary Characters: Rating - 9 out of 10
As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t interested in the main characters as much. But the side characters made up for it, especially Yuri and Shinjoo’s side romance and their relationship with the kid, Suho. The whole mini family that Rang had was incredibly sweet, especially since he didn’t think he would have one and that drove him to live and I... (*screams into the distance*). I still can’t believe they wrote him to just die after all of that. Anyways.
I was also interested in the other “fictional” characters around the foxes (the Snail Bride, Talupia and her husband, the nightmare lady) because of how their myths were going to contribute to the plot and the characters and such. They all had their own stories and how it impacts them because... they’re also people; they’re not human, but they’re still people with emotions, whether it’s love, anger, or fear. As for the humans, I loved the relationships and connections they had, especially those around Ji-Ah and their connections from the past. It was all super endearing to watch especially in the face of danger.
Additional Notes:
AGE - I mentioned it before, but wow, I’m going to emphasize it. The one major thing that bothered me is how Yeon fell in love with someone he watched grow up. It’s similar to how Goblin set it up, but.. Yeon met his first love when she was like... 9? 10? Essentially, she was a literal child and (as an education major who has to work with young children)........ I was just kind of bothered by that. I get that they worked around it by making them get together as she was older (25-30ish?) but when they did the flashbacks with her as a child, I felt uneasy all over again.
“Plot Twist,” i.e., Ji-Ah being part of the Imoogi - I felt like I knew Yeon was the one who killed her in the past and felt like it was gonna come back, but I was surprised when Ji-Ah had a part of the Imoogi with her. I thought it was a smart move because it also builds tension between the three characters: who will die and who will live? In standard kdramas, they have the antagonist cut and clear and I thought it would be the same in this instance, but it was more clear as the drama went on. It’s less of a plot twist, since it was kind of built from episode 2-3 but it’s further explained to be a more standard “plot twist.”
The Ending - I always have something to say about the end of dramas and most of them aren’t good, so... this drama is not an exception to this. I already mentioned how upset I am at the fact that Rang died for Yeon, but also Yeon coming back as a human made it confusing because there’s no way he would just be.. let off the hook like that, especially with the ending scene being that Yeon didn’t come back fully human? It was unclear. In my opinion, I felt that it would have been better if: one, he died off completely or two, the two would meet again later (an ending like Hotel del Luna, where they’re both completely human and have the stable life they dreamed of).
Overall Rating: 7 out of 10
Recommended?
↣ Yes: this is a fantasy drama that had similar vibes to Goblin, so if you liked Goblin, this is probably a drama for you. The main characters also had a steady relationship building, with both making the effort so the romance aspect is a bit more top tier. It also incorporates a lot of Korean myths, so if you’re interested in seeing them, this drama would be a good recommendation. There’s also lots of twists (I don’t really know if you would call it that, but whatever) in the plot, so it always turns into unexpected directions that dramas don’t really go into (at least the ones I’ve watched). There’s also the theme of family, both biological and formative (less nuclear-family structure) that touches your heart a bit more too.
↣ No: first of all, it’s a fantasy drama—it’s gonna have the standard issues with fantasy dramas: age gaps, lots of talk with other myths and the “balanced world and whatnot”, etc. It’s pretty cliche as well with lots of tropes that are problematic (as mentioned above). There’s also a bit of imagery that might be problem: there’s a few episodes with creepy themes, so you might have to skip out on it if you know you can’t handle look at it (like me). There’s also lots of death mentioned throughout the show, considering how one of the characters literally just mass murder people because he didn’t get things his way. This drama is a bit frustrating to watch as well, either because you’re not be as super invested in it or the characters might be too much or you can’t stand mint chocolate chip and watch the main characters eat it all the time.

pileofsith's:
What are your fave foods/dishes? um I haven't even tried to figure out what a limited list of favorites would be. To maybe go with component foods, I clearly like chocolate (preferably dark), cheddar cheese, mangoes, potatoes, apples, grapefruit, tangerines...
Any types of characters you immediately know you will like? evidently the extremely specific archetype of poor home scenario bad decision about 17 and def not the hero (that would be me, too) but uh, otherwise... I don't know. eta: antiheroes, frequently. (Also: honest to goodness nerds like oh Newt Geisler or Hego Damask)
Last music you listened to on repeat? probably technically "I Radio Heaven" but. "Dog Days Are Over" on repeat is still very much a Mood.
Anything funny or bizarre happen to you (recently or from way back)?hmmm nothing's really coming to mind... I did avoid hitting both a deer and a opossum recently.
Most annoying tropes in a fictional narrative?that would be... old boys' clubs, forced romance, and ??? kinda a lot of straight up heroes (...moving back up to a previous question...)
Cheerful post-apocalypse or cosy gothic horror?I probably like the latter better but I could go for the former too depending on type of apocalypse. The Giver and Gathering Blue were childhood staples.
Most interesting period in history to read about/watch documentaries on? any really. That said, I tend to have an interest in 20th century Russia (/yes, the СССР) and uh physics and mathematics history especially ancient math and from about 1800? onward in physics
Three fave monsters/cryptids/mythology or folklore creatures? hmmm oddly not really sure I have some. But perhaps: dragons ala Dragon Rider, Ents (...trees), and does Orion count bc I like the constellation (and the song)
Earth, fire, water or air? earth (even though I am eager to learn more about combustion. But I fear deep water and heights so...)
What language(s) would you love to know? what language wouldn't I? if it's just like instantly know without studying, I'm ambivalent about that for some form of Chinese but ...I might be tempted to use it on like Italian (I just don't like it *that* well but might use it) and French (which I like better but has annoying features for learning. Though not one of my top favorite languages either) and to majorly improve my Spanish.
hegodamask's:
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall? wiinter? Idk. Not summer though, at least not here--I become significantly demotivated beyond about 75°F outdoors.
What’s the best movie and the best TV show you’ve watched this year?um...what have I even watched I've been so busy. Not much recent. I guess uh Finding Dory and ...Monk?
If you could travel to anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go? I'm probably not taking proper advantage of this but with so little time to prepare I think I might just opt for somewhere in the north US. Michigan is an old favorite, or Minnesota, or New England, or the Pacific Northwest. Montana... (Yes, there are other places in the world I would and hope to visit, but I am afraid I probably wouldn't venture out of the country, except perhaps to Canada, on 24-48 hours notice.)
House party or clubbing? (if you really had to choose) I haven't been to either, I think? (I don't think a brewery or a bar count as clubbing). I guess house party, hoping that it's...my sort of scene (do people say that? Look, in what I like to think of as a very Nome-like twist, most of the times I have been tipsy have involved math...)
Top three pet peevs sexism for one ugh. Also uh, unnecessarily sexual discussion and people who antagonize and/or insult my friends.
What’s your dream job? Do you already have it? no, I do not have it; I don't even know what it would be. ...I might like doing food science/engineering consultation? It would involve food and also science...
If you could be any mythical creature what would you be? uh do elves (per like Tolkien or DnD. NOT Pratchett's!) count? I feel like maybe I could get away with indulging my learn all the things! impulse with their life span... (if not, though even less likely to count: hobbit)
Tell me a random fact about yourself I am really interested in lacemaking and embroidery even though I don't really like overembellished clothing.
If you could have a movie or TV show made exactly how you wanted it, what would it be about and who would be in the cast? what do I want such a thing to be about... honestly the thing I've really thought about doing in the medium of film is music videos! Once I tried to write down what I'd want for one of "Viva La Vida". but for the second question idk. I suppose the artists make some sense there but our visions might not match. And ...there aren't a lot of people, I think somehow, that I really like to look at, so idk.
What would your younger self say if they saw you now? I don't really know but tbh I think smol mouse would be horrified because of some of the aspects of how we were raised and the way I've shed some of them... O.o
My own questions to come...
1. Are there any features that tend to attract you in a language (e.g. resembles Latin/uses the sound ð/VSO order/accent)? 2. Do you like math? Why or why not? 3. If so limited for a year, would you rather drink (regardless of alcohol content) only sour drinks or only drinks that are too sweet? 4. Do you have any negative experiences with doors? 5. What is your favorite cookie? 6. What is the first browser you remember using? 7. Is it easier to list a) things you haven't tried in your usual produce department b) things you have tried or c) the only things they carry due to limited selection? Make the list! 8. What if anything (e.g. curtains, blinds, suncatchers) is on the window nearest your bed (or is there not one in your bedroom?) and what type of view (e.g. street/parking lot /woods etc) does it have? 9. If you could have the chance to redo something until you were satisfied with the outcome, what would it be? 10. What do you look for in a desk, or do you prefer to work at some other piece of furniture?

Buffy season 1 disk 2
ep 5 Never Kill a Boy on the First Date
this is the second vampire in the show that looks like Trakis
Wait you came here for Buffy not B5 references? So sorry they aren’t stopping.
Buffy’s hot for mysterious poetry boy in the library. It’s a cute scene of her showing some vulnerability. Then she ends by asking Giles if her dress makes her look fat. Fat girls are gross you guys. Girls should always be worried about if they’re fat. Boys don’t like chunks man, especially when they’ve got 0 body fat. No Im not going to stop, it pisses me off. Get back to the vampires.
Holy shit Xander “for kissing you and telling the school how easy you are.” Buzz off bro. I’m staggered.
Willow was worried about Giles, which she had reason to be b/c now he’s locked in a bathroom.
Angel is pretty much Tuxedo Mask. He arrives as sexy as possible, says little, helps not at all, leaves mysteriously.
omg take Owen to the funeral home. He’s so excited. You can leave him by the coffin displays and he’ll be occupied for hours trying them all on for size.
I like action Giles even if he’s really bad at it. And.... knocked unconscious! He’s def gonna be my fave.
Oh come on, buff vampire, you jumped right into that incinerator, that was so easily avoided.
Owen is an adrenaline junkie and only wants to date Buffy b/c nearly got him killed. And he reads Emily Dickenson. Maybe he should see the councilor from the last episode.
I’m glad Watcher is not a gender specific job like Slayer. Also Giles wanted to be a fighter pilot. And he’s such a good dad. and Buffy is worried about getting him hurt. Omg I’ve found my platonic duo. The show has officially nabbed me.
6 The Pack
There are were-hyenas in this. I’m in.
“You haven’t had a crush lately?” “No, not lately.” Buffy... it was last episode. Also Angel is way too old for Buffy, even not being a vampire.
I’m not going to point out every time a fat joke gets made. Just assume there’s at least one per episode.
I love Herbert. And the principle. I like them both :)
Xander’s moodier than usual. They have to work really hard to show that b/c he’s moody all the time. Lol that pig is totally not making those noises.
I hope Xander gets eaten. I won’t miss him. DONT YOU DARE EAT THAT PIG HE IS THE LIGHT OF GOOD!
Lol Buffy complains to Giles that Xander’s being a jackass. Giles is like “Xander’s just like that.” I knew you were my favorite, G. NO HERBERT OH NO YOU MONSTERS! The principle is upset b/c you ate his pet and he SHOULD BE BECAUSE HE LOVED THAT PIG!
HOLY SHIT THEY ATE THE PRINCIPAL, TOO! This ep is brutal! That poor animal loving man.
DO NOT EAT THE LADY WITH THE INFANT
Hyenas will track the missing member of their pack until they find them. Well how terribly convenient. Established in this ep that Hyenas call your name. Maybe they should have been possessed by a parrot.
Giles do not go in the hyena house alone. That zookeeper is sketch as hell. He’s standing in there and he’s like “Oh damn I stumbled into it again.” It’s great watching him realize he’s messed up. Then he gets beaten up again. I’m glad (most) the characters are not dumb.
RIP Herbert and Herbert’s dad
7 Angel
The Three are like Blade in Triplicate. Also a Fumigation Party is hilarious.
Everyone learn from Buffy. If you’re in a pissy mood, you probably need to go to bed. Say goodnight, it’s the responsible thing to do.
She shouted “Get in, come on!” but it sounded an awful lot like an ADR line. I think they did that when they realized Angel just came in uninvited then told her vampires can’t come in uninvited. In universe, though? Very very lucky Buffy shouted “Get in!” when she did or he’d be torn apart by evil Blades.
“Angel?” “Yeah?” “Do you snore?” I thought that was really cute ^^
“We’re not going to be fighting Friar Tuck.” Shut up Buffy, you don’t know that.
Angel admits to being a cradle robber.
I like the way vampires work in this universe. They’re demons that take over peoples bodies. They steal your identity, but once you turn you’re dead b/c you lose your soul. I like that a lot. I predict it gets ret-conned.
That tattoo was 200 years old? Heck no, unless he was in for a really recent touch-up.
The Master or whoever is reminding me so hard of G’Kar right now, lol. It’s b/c he’s posturing like a diva and shaking his head around a lot. The way his makeup wrinkles doesn’t help the likeness although G’Kar is far handsomer.
Misunderstanding. Come back from commercial and Angel’s tossed out a window. That was an excellent transition.
I love Giles sitting with Buffy’s mom talking about parenting concerns since they’re pretty much her parents. Does Buffy’s mom have a name?
So Angel was cursed to have his soul back by gypsies. Somehow both a trope and a subversion of a trope? And speaking of tropes, blonde chick saunters in wearing another school girl uniform like its a fetish.
The Master then has a room-trashing temper tantrum shouting. “She was my favorite for four hundred years!” and he officially sheds his G’Kar and becomes the new Radu.
There is no way I can be threatened by him or his Damien.
8 I Robot... you Jane.
I’m excited for this one b/c it promises to have a robot in it.
SHIT THERE’S A DRAKH IN THIS!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!
Recall from the whole Na’Far thing back in episode 4 that the same makeup/special effects shop worked on both Buffy and Babylon 5 so it may just be a Drakh, I mean who the hell knows? They’re definitely using the same design language for the vampires they did for like every alien in Crusade.
OMG Giles’ name is Rupert. And hearing all this 1997 technology scare is just HILARIOUS. What would Rupert say if he knew I had a computer in my butt pocket that could run the space shuttle? Also Miss Calendar is flirting so hard with Giles it’s like the little boy pulling his crush’s pigtails on the playground.
Dangit! There’s no robot! It’s Tom Riddle.
OMG Miss Calendar’s crimped hair is atrocious.
lol and if Buffy knew about the future and how online dating is like the #1 way to meet people in the 2010s she’d be saying much different things. Buffy is right about the chemistry thing though. Having a relationship based on personality is great but when you meet in person and there’s no chemistry that’s a thing that needs to be dealt with and OH MY GOSH THAT LAPTOP OH MY LORD
Tonight on this very special episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, cat-fishing, gaslighting, and you.
Good thing this late-90s computer has a speak and spell function so Willow and Malcolm can speak all their lines.
Miss Calendar just pulled the race card for some reason? “You think knowledge should be kept in depositories were only white guys can get them.” Like... in the 90s were poc not allowed in libraries? I mean women obviously are b/c Miss Calendar’s there. She came in there specifically to fight with her boyfriend Giles over whether or not books suck -- which they don’t. And neither does the internet. If she is a computer and Giles is a book their kids are going to be well educated.
Buffy was saved by her rubber soled shoes.
lol the one computer guy is named Dave. “I’m sorry Dave” says the computer. Then he pens Dave’s suicide note. That was done on purpose and I love it. PS the Internet is scary! SCARY OOOH DANGER! DANGER! FEAR!
We get to see Willow’s room! Also I love 90s fantasy tech.
Miss Calendar is a self-proclaimed techno-pagan. “There are more of us out there than you thin.”
OMG THERE IS FINALLY A ROBOT IN THIS EPISODE AND ITS A FREAKIN ROBO DRAKH! I gotta find a way to put this guy in Babylon 6. He’s a riot.
“I don’t dangle a corkscrew from my ear.”
“That’s not where I dangle it.”
Giles:
Okay disk 2 is over. I’m liking the show even more as the edges continue to wear off. The datedness is hilarious and doesn’t spoil a thing about it. It adds a richness and layer of entertainment not even intended by the original team.

AMA Transcript: Your Soul Is Where I Made My Home
This past week, @victoriapyrrhi and @thefishywitchy came around to talk about their 2016 Resbang, Your Soul Is Where I Made My Home! Here’s some of what went down:
Q: Was this an idea that you'd been sitting on a long time, or something that sorta came to you and you ran with?
Victoriapyrrhi: This was actually one that I'd been sitting on for a while. I had the first like... 3 pages written, pretty much exactly as they are now, for maybe a year or two? I wish I could remember what initially made me write down that first bit, but when I was thinking about Resbang, it kind of hit me that this might be a good time to make myself write it, that if I didn't I wasn't sure when I'd ever have the guts to tackle it. June 2015, says gdocs. I sat on it for a while because I really wanted to do right by the idea.
Q: What inspired the story? Because it was something that was hard for me to read. (Hard as in emotional). And I just wondered what spurned something so thought-provoking?
Victoriapyrrhi: Ah, it's hard to say? I think the underlying desire was a little bit my own feelings about pregnancy, and a little bit wanting to explore how Maka might interact with pregnancy, and a good deal of trope?? subversion around Having a Baby. I guess less trope of having a baby and more like trope of happy families. Like...what if it wasn't Soul's kid? What does that mean for Maka, for the pregnancy, for Soul and his feelings? Turns out I have a lot of feelings about found families.
Q: As someone who writes both for Resbang and not: how do you feel the Resbang process affects/changes your writing process?
Victoriapyrrhi: Resbang gives me a damn timeline, which, if you've seen my writing lately, I apparently really fucking need, and also helps me be more intentional about putting out a complete story. This is one of the things I'm really happiest about writing. But also, there's a lot of stuff I didn't do that I wanted to, and I tried to be really intentional about what to leave in/leave out so that the story was complete, made sense, and still got across what I wanted, and this time around I really felt that in a way I haven't before.
Q: For Aer: How did you decide which scenes you wanted to art, and what affected the decision to make a storyboard video?
Aer: Well first of all, I knew that I had to choose a scene that was already down, for fear that I wouldn't be able to accomplish what I wanted to. Plus it was just a great scene anyway! As soon as I read it, I knew that was the one.
Victoriapyrrhi: (To both my artists credit, they did amazing work with what I had done, which was NOT A LOT for a long time.)
Aer: As for what made me want to do a storyboard, it's pretty simply that I've just always wanted to make one! It's like my dream job tbh. Resbang seemed like a good opportunity for practice!
Q: So let me preface this with I really appreciated that the sex was intentional, consensual, and good--and the dude seemed decent enough and not like a douchecanoe. Just a stranger. That said, you choose not to have Maka try to contact said dude at all and I'm sort of wondering where that choice come from. Why you went that direction and what her motivations were.
Victoriapyrrhi: Part of it was deliberate.... I mean - okay obviously it's deliberate - but also part of it was Maka's initial desire to have a one night stand. She already had feelings for Soul, and the one night stand was a very deliberate choice on her part to distract herself from that. So not contacting him was an extension of that - they both didn't exchange numbers, they were complete strangers. Idk. In a way it was shitty of Maka to not let a dude know his genetic material was brewing. Some of it was selfishness too, like - this was her decision to make, and adding in the dude was another factor she didn't want to deal with at the time.
Q: For Aer: What program/s did you use to make your pieces?
Aer: I used PaintTool SAI for all of the frames, and put them together in a very old version of adobe elements lmao. [I used] PaintTool SAI for the cover I made too, with some photoshop editing.
Q: You mentioned not being able to do a bunch of stuff that you wanted to do, and I was wondering, what kind of stuff?
Victoriapyrrhi: I actually have a list of like... time stamp content I want to do. I wanted to hit some other trope things, like more in the bed-sharing department. And I never got to hot pregnancy sex. There's this note: "Maka and Liz have a heart to heart mom/pregnancy/abandonment." I did want to, but I also couldn't figure out a way to get it in there that didn't feel forced, and I was ultimately more intent on getting out the story I wanted than the sex I wanted. STORY OF MY LIFE HEEEYOOOOOOO.
Q: The pregnancy stuff was pretty realistic though. Did you research?
Victoriapyrrhi: I had a lot of incognito tabs about timelines and trimester stuff, and I drew on some stuff from my friend Hannah's pregnancy.
Q: Where did Soylent baby come from?? Did you just randomly find it while looking for stuff for the fic?
Victoriapyrrhi: Oh DIIIP. Mk, I couldn't remember because I think it was about the same time that Hannah was preggers. But uh, yeah. First visual reaction was uh... grotesque. Gruesome.
Q: I saw you said you'd had 3 pages written for a couple of years. What part was that? I'm curious about what your first scenes were.
Victoriapyrrhi: Literally the first bit of the fic. I think it was right before "Happy Monday."
Q: What was the hardest part to write for you?
Victoriapyrrhi: Literally most difficult to just get down on the page was probably about the time they started apartment hunting. Emotionally, shit. Most of it? Probably her conversations with Soul about the pregnancy.
Q: I appreciate how real those were, by the way. Like, how it wasnt the 'usual' trope of 'oh of course we're keeping it.' I'm very very glad altnernatives like abortion were considered and it took time for her to decide what she wanted.
Victoriapyrrhi: Yeah that was something that I wanted to explore. And actually, some of the harder parts were about that - less the material and more really trying to think through why does Maka want to keep it. Initially I wanted to do teen!pregnancy Maka, and I talked a lot to Aer and Marsh about it and I couldn't wrap my head around even a 21 year old Maka keeping the pregnancy. So i ended up aging her up a bit more.
Aer: I was absolutely unhelpful with the important stuff lmao. But I def think you made a good choice.
Victoriapyrrhi: Pffff, liiies. You were awesome, if only because you let me babble at you and bounce ideas off of you. But yeah, [with] 27/8 year old Maka I had an easier time with "rationalizing" keeping the pregnancy.
Q: OH also out of curiosity, because I ran into this in my own writing process not at ALL where I thought it would happen, if at all, did you get extra emotional while writing any part?
Victoriapyrrhi: Man. Really just writing supportive Soul and fearful Maka probably was the most [emotional]. Not writing that conversation between Liz and Maka probably spared me a lot of discomfort.
Q: The bed scene killed me. Did you think of that prior to writing or did that come about while you were writing?
Victoriapyrrhi: The bed scene was actually like... last minute compromise, because I couldn't get the sex in, but I'd been thinking about bed sharing since the very beginning. I think it was the last scene I wrote.
Victoriapyrrhi: Oh shit, I forgot. Spirit's note to Maka also made feel some kind of way.
Aer: GOD, all the Spirit got to me. I think the scene where she told him is one of my favorites.
Victoriapyrrhi: Hahah same.
Aer: I would have liked to illustrate it, but alas.
Victoriapyrrhi: :____: I am sorry.
Aer: WHY ARE YOU SORRY?
Victoriapyrrhi: I definitely wish I had written faster.
Aer: Oh no, it wasnt you at all.
Q: You nailed pregnancy. I was feeling pregnancy ptsd while reading, it was an honest take on it.
Victoriapyrrhi: I pulled a LOT from hannah, both shit I remember her mentioning, and also I just texted her a shload of questions -___-.
Victoriapyrrhi: Oh, uhhhh i think going back to shit I wanted to put in, and didn't get to. The doc is peppered with stuff like:
Q: It's nice reading the notes though. Q: Like a peek in your mind and process.
Victoriapyrrhi: Lol, that way lies madness. A lot of the ones on this one are me trying to remember timeline markers - especially for this one I kept getting weeks and trimesters confused.
Victoriapyrrhi: Mmmmmmm whatcha saaaaaaaaaaaay:
Q: I loved the bed sharing.
Victoriapyrrhi: The initial plan for the bed sharing was something like > oh we can't afford a 3 bedroom > baby and I will share a room > why don't you move into mine, etc.
Q for Aer: You did a really good job capturing emotion in your work. Was there any part that was particularly challenging and did you have other things you wanted to draw but didn't?
Aer: Ahh thank you so much!! I'm glad it came across well! I think the hardest part was just drawing certain parts with a lot of movement, like the door opening and the hug and stuff like that? And yes, I wanted to draw sooo many more things. I actually want to still. Someday...*wistful stare into the distance*
Q: What kinda music did you listen to while writing?
Victoriapyrrhi: I wish I'd thought to do the playlist in conjunction with the story instead of like... 3/4 of the way through. Also that I had physical copies of the songs that Aer was looking at using/did use.
Aer: I just listened to the song that ended up in the finished product on repeat lol. OH, I also listened to a ton of other songs while trying to decide what I wanted to put in. I found a new band to love because of it!
Q: I know Bones and I tend to listen to completely unrelated to the scene music, but others listen to the feelsy stuff as they go.
Victoriapyrrhi: Honestly it's about half and half for me. Here's the one I ended up officially making http://suan.fm/mix/sFBuhxB. But I tended to listen to a LOT of the Three Days Grace album One X. And then uhhh, in this order: Gamefall, Wake Me Up Faster Without You, Fifty Shades of Love, Flawed Design, Hollywood, and Broken Bones, with like One Headlight thrown in there. Some of that [was]... super applicable. But then there's like... most of the Three Days Grace, and the Lost in Hollywood, which is System of a Down. Some of it was less the lyrics and more just how the music made me feel? I think I listened to Gamefall and Flawed Design on repeat for... inadvisably long. To the point where for a while I was like "BONES MY FEELINGS" and she was finally like "fuckin' DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT THEN."
Q: Do you feel like you grew as a writer in any particular way this Resbang? Like, you mentioned earlier timeline things, but was there something else you feel like you leveled up in? Same for Aer.
Aer: Oh man yeah, it was such a huge undertaking so I'm really proud of myself for finishing it, and I think it really helped me grow as an artist.
Victoriapyrrhi: I think I touched on it a little earlier, but this feels like one of my more complete stories? Like... I feel like I was able to get the final product closer to what was in my head than i have with most of my other stories, and I'm really proud of that.
Aer: I also think i learned a lot of time management because of it?? I still don't know how i finished EARLY like what???
Victoriapyrrhi: You did SO GOOD, and you helped kick my ass into gear for sure.
Aer: Ahaha I am glad I helped.
Q: How long did the pregnancy test scene story board take you? That turned out so beautifully!!!
Aer: HAHAHAHAHAHA ooh boy. I... dont know???? tbh. But it was a while. I think I finished it... just after final check ins or something??? I got done a little early actually, but since I had another Resbang I was still working lol, just not on this one.
Victoriapyrrhi: You definitely had the bulk of it done really early tho!
Aer: Yeah I... I don't know how. Magic? Sacrifices to the art gods? Something like that.

With that established, let’s get going on the reading and the chatting!
QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?
QUESTION 2. What significance do you believe the title has to the overall story, whether in terms of plot or meaning? How do you think it ties into Key specifically as a character and how his future actions might proceed?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. At the moment, who is your favorite character? What about that character earns them this favor?
QUESTION 4. How do you think Chas, who originally pushed Key into the puddle, ties into the rest of the story? How did he know Key was the chosen savior, and do you think he might show up in Paradise?
snuffysam
Favorite scene has gotta be the fight between Crenen and Kirid. At this point I really shouldn't be rooting for Crenen to win anything. He's clearly a horrible person, so I have no reason to want him to survive this fight and rule over even more people. And yet... that fakeout with Kirid's hand seemingly going through Crenen's chest had me at the edge of my seat.
snuffysam
I'm curious how question 2's subject matter ends up playing out. Looking at the synopsis... Jason “Key” Sterling is a liar, and he knows that liars don’t go to Paradise. So when he’s pushed into a puddle and wakes up in a fantastical world called just that, he knows there’s a catch. There's potentially thematic relevance in that Key thinks he isn't deserving of being the subject of this prophecy, because he believes he's a bad person at heart? Alternatively... do we see anyone besides Key lie in this world? Maybe this truly is Paradise, but it just ain't all it's cracked up to be.
snuffysam
(i suppose i could just read the original book to find out but that would be cheating :p)
For favorite character... I have a hard time deciding between Crenen and Veija. Veija is such a fun take on the "seer" trope with how ditzy and unfocused she is on everything. But Crenen... he's so entertaining. Like I was clicking from page to page just to see what horrible and/or crazy thing Crenen would do next.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 5. What has been your favorite illustration in the comic so far? What specifically about it do you like?
QUESTION 6. Why do you think Key chose to go to Paradise despite the experiences he had there? Overall, what do you think this choice says about destiny and free will thematically? Additionally, do you believe what Key is experiencing is truly real?
RebelVampire
1) I think my favorite scene in the comic is the one where Key talks with Veija in the dreamish world. Veija is all around a super entertaining character and it was hilarious every moment she was in the scene. But I also liked that we got some heavy exposition for Key as well cause it added some weight to the story. It was a good best of both worlds scenario that really got me more invested in the story as a whole. 2) I want to get super metaphorical and say that Key seems the most dishonest with himself. Like he really holds himself back, possibly as a defense mechanism, so if Key is lying to anybody, it's him about what he wants, what he thinks he's capable of, and so forth. However, the strongest people tend to be the ones who overcome that sort of adversity, which might make Key be the, well, umm, key to overcoming the general complacency brought on by despair. At the very least you could argue hope can sometimes be a lie, but sometimes that lie is what pulls you through.
3) My favorite character is probably Veija. Veija is like this beautiful existence of contradictions, and I think Veija legit gets the best facial expressions in the comic. She was the one I was most excited to appear again in the comic a second time, so gotta go with her. 4) I feel like Chas definitely has to be from paradise. Like maybe he's a secret agent sent there to find Key. I def hope we see him again, cause I feel like he knows things even other characters like Crenen don't know that could be vital. As for how he knew to choose Key though, I assume he just had some prophecy to go off of. Although I personally find it more entertaining to think that Chas just pushes people into puddles and hopes eventually one of them with go through.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 7. Which characters do you enjoy seeing interact the most? What about their dynamic interests you?
QUESTION 8. Do you believe that Key can actually help everyone as was foretold? If so, how do you think Key will manage to do it? Additionally, what do you think is the root cause of everyone becoming sick?
RebelVampire
5) I definitely have to go with the large panel on this page here for fave illustration http://puddlecomics.com/comic/loss-12/ I'm really in love with the contrasting colors cause you got this magic stuff juxtaposed against a beautiful night sky. It gives it this beautiful, mystic quality that I'm an absolute sucker for. 6) I think there's kind of two parts to Key's decision. The first part is the fear of what if. Cause at this point, if he doesnt try to help, hes going to live with the eternal regret and thought that maybe he really couldve helped - and that he essentially sentenced a bunch of people to die because he was too afraid. The other part of Key's decision I think is just him wanting to find purpose. In regards to choice and the themes and stuff, I think this choice kind of says what is usually the case for destiny. You always have a choice on whether to follow it or not. But sometimes destiny knows what it's talking about. And in other cases, destiny is somewhat similar to duty. Also, last part, yes, I think Key is experiencing something very real. But I'd also argue dreams are real experiences even if that aren't experiences that happen in the real world.
7) I enjoy seeing Key and Crenen interact the most. Crenen is by and large a very entertaining character. From manner of speech to how he conducts himself. Yet it's pretty clear he cares about things in his own way, including Key a little bit. Whereas Key seems to have this strange almost stockholm-y syndrome thing with Crenen going on where he hates him and doesn't want him to die. So overall their relationship gives me many conflicting feels and I like that, cause relationships don't always have to be clean and straightforward. THey can be a mess of questions. 8) I think Key can actually help. At the very least he's more hopeful than everyone else it seems, and as I said earlier, bringing hope can mean a lot. As for actual concrete results, maybe they'll use Key to make a magic vaccine. Or maybe Key will kill the source somehow. Which I do kind of feel like the sickness isn't just a normal sickness. So not just some rando disease that sprouted up. Like maybe Paradise as a world is decaying and that's affecting the people, or something.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 9. What sorts of art or story details have you noticed in the way the comic is crafted that you think deserves attention?
QUESTION 10. Why do you think Jenen refuses to take over the Yenen clan, and why did that involve him seemingly leave the clan? Do you think Jenen will have a change of heart? Regardless, how will his original choice be challenged?
RebelVampire
. . . 9) One of the details I really appreciate is the details on the foliage. Foliage is super tedious in any regard. There's a lot you can get away with passing first glance test though. THat being said, when its up close, this comic really goes all out and doesnt skimp on the foliage. For example, this page http://puddlecomics.com/comic/midnight-duel-17/. You can see the little vein stem things in the leaves, and that's just such a beautiful detail that really sells the nature when you stare at the image longer. I love it. <3 10) I think there's two parts to why Jenen won't take over the Yenen clan. The first part is just that being a leader is a burden and actually kind of sucks. XD THe second part, though, I just feel like Jenen is searching for something that being tied down to one place would not serve. Cause he gives me the kind of vibe of someone who doesn't care about the physical world all that much and is more into the abstract. As for why this all caused him to leave, well, would you want Crenen breathing down your neck? XD I don't think Jenen will change his mind about leading, but I do think he'll stick around to help Crenen of his own free will. I do think being around sick people is kind of gonna make him question everything though. Cause like Key, it's not easy to do nothing when you can see a ton of people need help.(edited)
snuffysam
4) For Chas - it is worth noting that we never see his ears. So I could definitely see him being a plant from Paradise. Perhaps an aide of Veija? It's odd that he wouldn't have been mentioned yet, but Veija might have forgotten that she sent him there...
snuffysam
5) I absolutely love the page @RebelVampire mentioned, though I have to give an honorable mention to this page: http://puddlecomics.com/comic/the-seers-test-17/ The way the light beams were drawn just gives the whole page a serene feel.
6) Honestly, I think Key has kind of gotten fond of the people's he's met. Jenen showed kindness to him, and Crenen... also has sometimes, but mostly Key seems to have a bit of Stockholm Syndrome lol. Anyway, that plus knowing that people will die if he doesn't go back helped him come to that decision.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 11. What do you think are this particular comic’s strengths? What do you think makes this comic unique? Please elaborate.
QUESTION 12. Do you think Crenen will come to believe in Key as a savior as some of the other characters do? What is your takeaway from the sentiment that it’s better to hope than despair, and how might we see this theme throughout the comic?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 13. What are you most looking forward to in the comic? Also, do you have any final thoughts to share overall?
QUESTION 14. Overall, how do you think Key’s adventures will change him as a person? What sort of experiences do you think will be the catalyst for those changes? Additionally, do you think Key will want to return home after all is said and done?
RebelVampire
@snuffysam I like the idea of Veija just flat out forgetting she sent Chas. So Chas shows up and Veija is like "hello who are you" XD
11) I think this comic's strengths are the beautiful art. The style is unique, the character designs are interesting, and overall its just a joy to look at just because everything is so cohesively designed. 12) I personally think Crenen will come to believe. Honestly I'd argue he kind of believes already in his own way. Not that he'll put all the eggs in that basket, but I think he'd rather bet on Key as opposed to nothing at all. Which this ties into my takeaway from the sentiment that it's better to hope than despair. You're more likely to make a change when you hope and strive to fulfill that hope. Which I feel is something we'll see Key inspire in a lot of people. And because they'll start hoping again, they'll start making changes for the better.
13) I am looking forward to more Veija being a doof and getting some more concrete info on how Key might help. The former for just the pure entertainment, the latter cause I'm eager to see the large direction the story will take, cause then more theory floodgates can open. 14) I think overall the adventures will instill more self confidence in Key. He strikes me as the type who really doesn't like himself, so I think he'll get some self love in there as well as he learns there are things he can do, even if they don't seem to matter in the short term. As for what will cause them, I think it'll just be the overall where he helps someone -> sees effects. Cause it's easier to believe stuff like that when it's obvious and concrete. I actually don't think Key will want to return home at the end. Maybe to say good-bye, but I could legit see Key just wanting to stay in Paradise with the companions he's made. Granted hopefully his good-bye would be less depressing than the one that just recently happened XD

That is a good question, whether Key will return home or not. He's definitely growing to like the people he's met along the way, but it's not like he hates his family back home. Could be a thing where he lives in one world and pays the other a visit every once in a while? As for what I'm looking forward to the most... I'd say even more interactions between the main cast! Key's spent a bit of time separated from the others recently, so I'm yearning for more of that!
